There was a RECALL. The company, and the CDC were both so desperate for quick action they turned to the Postal Service to make what arrangements they could make to get all the unused ones OUT OF SERVICE and back into the company's hands.

We called them 'party lines'. We had them in rural Texas because it was too expensive to run individual lines to homes, so they ran one line that had individual numbers for each home. (At least that's the way I understood it)
Folks were known to pick up the phone at random times just to listen in on other people's conversations. Maybe that's why people in small towns always knew everybody else's business! LOL!
