The other problem is one of scale. If you think the TSA is big, just wait till you try to create a security agency big enough to look at every US air passenger the way the Israelis do, with the commensurate training. By way of comparison, the number of people who fly Israel’s airlines (and are subject to Israel-level security methods) every day is roughly equivalent to the number of people who fly out of Sacramento on that same day. I’ve seen one estimate that replicating Israeli security would cost $40 billion a year—five times the current TSA budget.
Israel has to face much greater terrorist avidity than the US has. To all reports, all this attention hasn’t found a single bomb. Some other weapons have been caught, but if this has led to the bust of any terrorist plot it is a deep dark secret. I’m more inclined to think 99% of the guns they find are from forgetful Bubbas.
