Welcome to this week's Nascar at FR race thread!

This Week - The AAA 400 at Dover

September 30, 2012

Dover International Speedway
Race Menu for the weekend series

Dover International Speedway

The way to best illustrate the early history of Dover International Speedway would be to look at the list of winners in the track's early years as a site for Cup racing. From 1969 through '80, 21 of the 22 Cup races at Dover International Speedway were won by drivers who either already had or would go on to win championships in NASCAR's top series.

The names of those winners are part of the fabric of the sport -- Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Benny Parsons and Darrell Waltrip. Allison and Petty rank first on the all-time winner's list at Dover International Speedway with seven victories apiece.

About 3,200 seats were added in 1982. Each following year until 1998, more seats were added.

In 1995, the track's surface was switched to concrete -- making it the first all-concrete superspeedway in the sport. The unique look of the white concrete surface still makes Doverýs appearance unique among the sport's bigger tracks.

Dover hosted the first Cup race held after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States. Dale Earnhardt Jr. got the win that day and took a giant American flag on a victory lap.

The 2013 Sprint Cup schedule: what’s new is, well, largely the same

As tracks started announcing their upcoming race dates, the 2013 schedule was beginning to be pieced together, and NASCAR gave the complete answer on Tuesday when it released the official 2013 Sprint Cup Series schedule. And it's pretty much the same as this year's schedule.

All 10 Chase tracks remain the same, and eight of them keep their order in the Chase. The only swap comes between Kansas and Talladega, as Kansas moves up to the fourth Chase race after being the sixth Chase race this year.

With Easter weekend falling on the final weekend of March, the spring Martinsville race remains on the first Sunday in April. The last off weekend of the season will be Sunday, July 21st.

The complete 2013 Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series schedules will be released later in the fall. The complete Cup Series schedule is below:

February 16: Shootout (Saturday night)
February 24: Daytona 500
March 3: Phoenix
March 10: Las Vegas
March 17: Bristol
March 24: Auto Club
April 7: Martinsville
April 13: Texas (Saturday night)
April 21: Kansas
April 27: Richmond (Saturday night)
May 5: Talladega
May 11: Darlington (Saturday night)
May 18: All Star Race
May 26: Charlotte (Sunday night)
June 2: Dover
June 9: Pocono
June 16: Michigan
June 23: Sonoma
June 29: Kentucky (Saturday night)
July 6: Daytona (Saturday night)
July 14: New Hampshire
July 28: Indianapolis
August 4: Pocono
August 11: Watkins Glen
August 18: Michigan
August 24: Bristol (Saturday night)
September 1: Atlanta (Sunday night)
September 7: Richmond (Saturday night)
September 15: Chicagoland
September 22: New Hampshire
September 29: Dover
October 6: Kansas
October 12: Charlotte (Saturday night)
October 20: Talladega
October 27: Martinsville
November 3: Texas
November 10: Phoenix
November 17: Homestead

Didn't get racin’ on radio in Fun City when I was a kid. First exposure to him was Wide World of Sports where we would get to see week (or more) old tape of races. Pretty sure the newsreels of Indy that we would see at the theaters had Ed Herlihy narrating so HE was my "voice of racing" for a while.

I remember a lot of stuff from the late 60s , other folk had abc and wide world of sports thank goodness, we didn’t even have a TV until 1960 and then heck, it pulled in one channel, nbc. all black and white. none of Nascar’s ‘diversity’. no sirree
