The State Department issued an official apology to passengers of the MS St. Louis, a German steamer carrying nearly 1,000 Jewish refugees that were denied entry into the US 73 years ago.
A ceremony was held to remember those passengers, who were turned away from Cuba, America and Canada in 1939. The ship was forced back to Germany, where one-third of the refugees perished at Auschwitz.
The State Department ceremony was attended by 200 guests, including 30 Holocaust survivors. Survivors from the St. Louis were in attendance as well, sharing their story firsthand to an audience that included Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns, Foreign Service Director General Linda Thomas-Greenfield, and Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism, Hannah Rosenthal.
As part of the ceremony a play was presented, The Trial of FDR, which depicts the tough choices the US made during World War II. The play is expected to perform across America as an educational tool.
Why only some?
A lotta good it’s gonna do them now!
Now there’s something worth apologizing for.
It is amazing the ends to which these folks will go, trying to prove the Holocaust did, in fact, happen.
Are the scum going to apologize to Rabbi Kahane and his family as well??
If not for him, no one would remember the St. Louis at all. But he got murdered by US muslims, with a nod and a wink from the government.
King FDR OWNS this one.
St. FDR has a lot to answer for. He made some horrible decisions, yet God gave America the victory.
Roosevelt, the Left’s god did that...................
The Jews voted for Roosevelt by 90% in 1940, and 90% in 1944, they loved the guy.
Please tell me you are being sarcastic.
OK. So how does this explain the U.S. State Department turning their backs on Jews and Israel NOW in 2012?
For a shocking look at FDR's disregard of Jews, I recommend THIS PROGRAM. I don't see how a Jew could ever vote 'rat after FDR didn't lift a finger to help them. FDR also opposed an anti-lynching law that had broad bipartisan support. Was he a snooty Hyde Park racist?
My husband’s grandfather returned to Germany to implore his family to come with him to the US. Only one came, a young doctor. She was almost picked up as the ship was stopped by a German sub and searched for escaping Jewish people. Subsequently during her life she was chief of staff of almost all the major hospitals in Memphis.
Congrats. You’re the only FReeper so far to pick up on that. Does that say something?
That speaks volumes that Hitler would waste a precious resource like a Submarine and its crew to stop and search ships for a few escaping Jews.
Apologizing for turning the Jews back and then not acknowledging the Holocaust.
Yes, that most people don’t read the posts.
And, sadly, about every election we get inundated with nuts of all kinds, including troll Holocaust deniers, so people probably assumed you were such a troll.
It is estimated that 709 of the passengers survived and 227 died. No help to FDR. Apparently the Dominican Republic was willing to accept the Jews but for some reason the captain did not try to go there after being turned away by Cuba.
Jewish refugees were turned away by so-called 'civilized' nations and sent to their deaths. Read the stories just today on "Inspector Dreyfus" actor Herbert Lom (RIP) and the fate of his girlfriend Didi when she was turned away at the port of Dover on the eve the German invasion of Czechoslovakia.
