It would be best for Europe as a whole if the European Union collapsed. The EU has become an oversized bloated meddlesome supranational bureaucracy that takes micromanagement to a ridiculous extreme. If it remained a “trade zone”, OK. Maybe if it even harmonized some technical standards on a voluntary basis by member states (however, over there the technical standards are set by legal bodies rather than technical professional societies like here in most cases, and the legal bodies, i.e. legislatures, just state “best engineering practices” - although here in the US it’s gone in the wrong direction, witness the clueless people in power in the EPA.). But the downfall I think was the unified currency, which I suspect led to some member nations getting a bit irresponsible with their spending, expecting the rest of the EU to bail them out. And the same leading a bunch of unelected drones in Brussels going on their micromanaging power trip.
The fanatics and ideologues aren’t going to let go of the EU for the most part.
The unified currency was designed to create a crisis. The EU elites even said so back in the 90s.
