Written off by many in his own party a mere month ago, Republican Rep. Todd Akin has been slowly rebuilding his Senate campaign after apologizing for inflammatory remarks about pregnancy and rape.
Now Akin is approaching a critical week that could determine whether his re-emerging campaign can gain enough momentum to put Missouri back in the battleground column as Republicans attempt to win control of the Senate from Democrats.
Tuesday is the deadline for Akin to get a court order to drop his challenge of Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. But Akin says he won't do so. Instead, Akin plans to ramp up his campaign. He's holding a fundraiser Monday with former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich. He's addressing a potentially influential group of pastors Tuesday morning. Then as the drop-out clock ticks down, he's kicking off a statewide bus tour for his Senate bid that will include venerable conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly.
"I believe the state of the campaign is looking better and better," Akin said Friday after engaging McCaskill in their first debate and then rallying on the Missouri Capitol lawn with supporters of a newly formed women-for-Akin coalition.
Akin has apologized repeatedly since a TV interview aired Aug. 19 in which he suggested that women's bodies have a natural defense against pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape." He has repeatedly rejected calls of top national Republicans including presidential candidate Mitt Romney to quit the race so the state GOP committee can appoint a replacement candidate. Yet some have doubted Akin's resolve.
"There are a lot of donors who have sat on the sidelines and are waiting" for Tuesday's drop-out deadline to pass, said Rick Tyler, a former Gingrich aide who joined Akin's campaign as part of the re-building effort. "We are tilling that hard soil

I sent him a CNote because it still comes down to dingy harry.
Akin doesn’t need a bus. He doesn’t need an influential group of pastors. He doesn’t need Phyllis Schlafly. He needs money and he doesn’t have any. His campaign’s financial gas tank is sucking air. That vaunted fundraiser with Gingrich is a $100 a plate dinner for about 500. Do the math. McCaskill will start bombarding the airwaves soon and all Akin can do is watch

The MGC group is also compiling a list of Tea Party groups (those that can endorse candidates) who endorse Akin for an expected announcement and press release this week.
Any updates/help with the above from anyone here would be appreciated.
Not just double standards, but the MSM on their side beating the hell out of everything non-PC while ignoring the racist, bigoted, one-sided crap that comes out of liberals. And to make the biggest deals out of “gaffes” versus policy issues, voting records, etc. What should be more important to these morons? Yet the MSM hasn’t a clue how to deal with technical issues. Just the simpleton stuff, someone says the “wrong” thing, or sexual issues (abortion, homosexuality) They are totally lacking in business, financial, political IQ.
Oops, had that backwards. Not $100 a plate for 500 but $500 a plate for 100. Either way, Akin will get $50,000 before expenses. That is a drop in the bucket for what he needs.
Thank you. I appreciate fellow donors! I didn't vote for him in the primaries, as I believed him to be too far behind. Every major candidate was polling well ahead of McCatkill. But now that he's won, and he's "too conservative" for liberals like the GOPe, it's up to us to support him.
Only Liberals can apologize for anything and be forgiven and not be reboiled by the media.
Akin can’t win this race and Newt Gingrich and other conservatives know this. Its still worth trying to prop him up and put on a brave front without spending alot of money on a lost cause. We still have a chance of winning the Senate by supporting other races where there is still a chance.
BTW, Akin was done in by his own words and actions, not anyone else.
There fixed it.
That’s BS. Akin was the target of a “macaca” attack which was whipped into a frenzy by over-reactive RINOs. I’m sure the Dems are ecstatic that the GOP keeps shooting its wounded.
McCaskill is evil, but she's not stupid. She calculated that Akin was the conservative candidate most likely to put his foot in his mouth and she spent several million dollars helping him win the Republican nomination. He obliged by making an offhand remark that provided her with the ammunition she needed to destroy his chances of election.
It doesn't matter what he said, what matters is that she used it to full advantage and turned this race around. Voters are emotional and fickle and she and her media buddies hit all the right buttons.
My prediction and take that for what it’s worth. Akin will win this election.
The only reason this article has come out now is to help convince Akin to stay in. Any appearance of balance is simply to cleverly disguise the true intent.
This article and other similar MSM efforts will get the desired result. And Akin will lose. Mission accomplished for the progressives courtesy Akin’s overweaning pride and stupidity.
Truly pathetic.
The ego Akin has until Tuesday.
Absolutely. They tell us to hold our noses and vote or the CINO, but refuse to do so when the shoe is on the other foot. Screw the GOPe
