Toyota, Honda and the like make their cars for our market here.
Thank you for the details.
“Toyota, Honda and the like make their cars for our market here.”
That’s true and they are both built in Right-to-Work states with non-union labor.
I have seen statistics that GM,Ford and Chrysler have as much as a $30.00 per burdened labor hour unfavorable variance when compared to the Japanese companies. Also, from personal experience, here in Northern California at the NUMMI Plant ( A now defunct joint venture between Toyota and GM) the Japanese shipped in the high-value parts i.e. power train and electronics) from Japan and did only the low-value sheet metal work and assembly here. They even shipped completed pickup beds for their trucks. They retained “just enough American content” to satisfy our government ( which is to say not enough).
As for imports from China. My guess is that that will come in time like everything else because our workforce has priced itself out of the market. BTW, the UAW local @ NUMMI is now shuttered and something on the order of 3,000 jobs went with it. Just give the Chinese time, and with the help of our Marxist government, they will take over the car market too. Just go try to buy and “american-made” toaster. It can’t be done.
