Noonan: America Meets Mr. Romney (Anticipating the highlights of the GOP's Tampa convention.)
WSJ ^ | 8-23-2012 | Peggy Noonan

It is good that Joe Biden is going to the Republican National Convention to hold high the flag of his party. People make fun of his gaffes, of his embarrassing verbal forays, but he's no fool and he knows how to take it to the other guy. The speech he is working on, to be given in the heart of downtown, just across from the convention site, will be stirring and stentorian: "All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Tampa, and, therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words, 'Ich bin ein Tampon.'"

I wish that were mine. It came in the mail from a Hollywood screenwriter, one of the gifted conservatives who quietly toil there.

This, amazingly enough, is how the campaign feels at the moment: both neck and neck and wide open. A week ago a longtime elected official, who's been making the rounds in his swing state, told me he thought the national polls were correct and yet wrong. Americans are telling pollsters they've already made up their minds, they know who they're for. But, he said, he's seeing a number of people who don't feel fully satisfied with their decision, who aren't certain they've made the right choice.

BREAK

May 5, 1961, Cape Canaveral, Fla., and everyone's fussing. This monitor's blinking and that one's beeping and Shepard is up there, at the top of a Redstone rocket, in a tiny little capsule called Friendship 7. Mission Control is hemming and hawing: Should we stay or should we go? Finally Shepard says: "Why don't you fix your little problem and light this candle?"

That's what a good speech and a good convention right now can do. There's a great race ahead. Make it come alive. Come on and light this candle.

That stirs the imagination. Who might that be? Somebody who seizes an opportunity for a great bit when it presents. But I need a name.

Seems Peggy is over her mad crush on 0. Wonder if she will pull another Tokyo Rose moment again like she did in 2008 at the Convention.

Nice article Peggy. Too bad at this point in the last election cycle, you were doing your best to trash Sarah Palin.

Anticipating the highlights of the GOP's Tampa convention.

I think it goes without saying that the highlight will be the:

Homosexual kiss!

Peggy knows a lot about writing speeches for dull, boring, snobs from political elite families.

Not only did she write the first President named George Bush's Thousand Points of Light Speech, she even took the public credit for writing it.

It was a real snoozer and very forgettable, the most memorable line being "Read my lips, no new taxes."

Who’s going to be the chief clown at the RINO Rodeo?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I believe John Glenn, not Alan Sheppard, commanded Friendship 7.

"Read my lips, no new taxes."

I went ballistic when Bush back-pedaled on that promise.

I went ballistic when Bush back-pedaled on that promise.

So did the voters and it cost him the election.

There was a thread on this forum the other day about Perot and there were some resident Pubbie elite cheerleaders trying to blame Perot not Bush for Clinton's victory.

Bush was a Rockefeller Republican elitist who was stupid enough to make a no new taxes promise the centerpiece of campaign, which means if you break your promise the next campaign will be defined by the broken promise.

Broken promises meant something in 1996, if they mean anything in 2012 then Barry be gone and Mittens be in like Flynn.

Alan Shepard’s historic mission had originally been set for October 1960, but was ultimately pushed back to May 5, 1961 as managers fretted over the risks. The postponements caused Shepard clear irritation and, after news that Mr Gagarin had become the first man in space, exasperation that he had not been allowed to claim the crown for himself. 'Why don’t you just fix your little problem and light this candle?' he yelled at launch controllers when one final glitch caused a few more minutes’ delay shortly before his 9.34am blastoff.

Sorry Peggy, you were among the delusional that supported Obama...your credibility is shot.

“Not only did she write the first President named George Bush’s Thousand Points of Light Speech, she even took the public credit for writing it.”

I did not know that. That was one of the most insipid bits of drivel to ever come from a Republican mouth. It makes more sense now.
