A man who owns gun stores in Garden City Park and Seaford was awarded $5 in a federal jury verdict last Wednesday that found his business suffered monetary damages from a wrongful arrest by the Nassau County Police for reckless endangerment in 2008.
Belmore resident Martin Tretola was awarded $3 million in compensatory damages and $2 million in punitive damages last week by a federal jury in Central Islip, according to court records. He was arrested on June 1, 2008 for allegedly maintaining an illegal firing range near a natural gas line at T&T Gunnery on 3778 Merrick Road in Seaford.
The lawsuit filed against Nassau County in 2008 said Tretola, who also owns T&T Tactical at 2180 Jericho Turnpike in Garden City Park, sustained losses of not less than $1 million as the result of losing his license to sell handguns for a year after the arrest until it was reinstated.
Im happy about the judgment, Tretola said.

The article is worth reading as an example of how a corrupt government tries to extort from honest citizens. Fortunately, the courts and the jury box worked in this case.
It makes you wonder how many citizens do not have the courage or resources to fight back, and end up being steamrollered by the system.
When I first read this, I was outraged. Then I realized somebody needs an editor.
he can buy 2 16 oz. sodas!
...or a gallon of gas and a bottled water, if the water’s cheap.
"Five dollars. Maybe I'll go to the movies... by myself."
Just great. A pack of out of control LEOs break our laws and “We the People” (tax payers) have to pay $5 million. It would have been a lot better if those resposable had to pay for their crimes.
Maybe not. Could be just another new federal tax. After all, the store owner is now one of the greedy 1%. He doesn't deserve to keep that money.
$3 million + $2 million = $5 after taxes.

LOL!
Well, it was the Nassau County cops that took the hit, so you and I won’t be paying for it unless you live in Nassau County (I don’t). Although those officers did not take a hit personally, you can bet the department has been served notice from the county commissioners about actions like this... and you can bet the county’s not interested in having such things happen again.
Not Good Enough, Every Last person involved belongs in Prison for Felony Kidnapping at the very least, All of their Assets should be seized to pay for the Damages, and any shortfall should be made up from the Union Membership and the Union itself, NOT THE TAXPAYERS. It is Called Personal Responsibility.
Fascism is as fascism does.
