David West behaved as a cattle buyer might when a prized bull entered the auction ring.
"One-hundred fifty for the revolver sir!" West shouted. "It's not too late!"
Alas, it was too late because the man with the pearl-handled revolver proceeded to turn over the firearm Saturday afternoon in exchange for a $75 Fred Meyer gift card. He chose that route rather than sell the gun for more money to West or any of a half-dozen men standing on a sidewalk between North Broadway Street and a parking lot north of Memorial Coliseum.
They were among a group of gun buyers who'd staked out periphery positions as a firearms "turn-in" took place inside the parking lot. The Ceasefire Oregon Education Foundation conducted the turn-in for four hours. Gun owners could turn in a weapon to foundation volunteers, who were assisted by Portland police with handling the weapons for eventual destruction. In return for each operable gun, owners received the gift card.
"I believe the majority of people would not show up here today," said foundation volunteer Liz Julee, "if they did not want their gun removed from circulation."
But a minority clearly knew that the price point began at about $80 cash to sell their weapons to West or to a handful of other buyers on the sidewalk. The group did not venture into the parking lot to solicit potential sellers, having been instructed by Portland police at last year's event to keep their distance.
West, 22, traveled from Medford. One of his first purchases of the day, a Remington Nylon 66 22-caliber rifle, was for $20. He immediately resold it for $100 to another gun buyer, Darren Campbell of Salem, who recognized the firearm as worth potentially triple what he paid.

One of the very few times I’ve ever actually yelled at my TV occurred a good number of years ago during one of the early buy-backs in DC.
Local news crew was covering the event live. They start interviewing this older lady who proceeds to tell them that she’s turning in her “Pappy’s” gun from his days as a Prohibition gangster. She then opens up the worn-looking box holding the gun to reveal ...
A vintage Thompson submachine gun. In mint condition. With three drum magazines.
Certainly worth more than the ~$100 she was going to get by turning it in. A LOT more. And by law/regulation the thing was required to be melted down.

Let’s see, these Liberals are in favor of assisted suicide and “the right to die”, but use as their main argument against guns is that they are used for suicide so have to be taken away from ordinary citizens.

I was dumping some crappy .22’s at a “buy-back” in NY state and an old gal walked in with a perfect condition M-1 in it’s original “U.S.” tan canvas case. The officer told her to take it to a gun shop and not to take less than $500 for it.

Well, while the morons are wrong on the merits in this case, just because SCOTUS says something doesn't make it true. Roe is 39 and it's still wrong. Wickard, Casey, Raich, Kelo, and the recent O-Care decision are all wrong. SCOTUS is probably wrong as often as they're right, if not more.
Kudos to the officer for not being a hoplophobic drone or accepting the turn-in and keeping it himself. An actual public servant. Hats off.
It did restore my faith in cops. Of course, he was an old-timer and didn’t appear like the new SWAT Team (all ‘civilians’ are the enemy) type.
Seriously, I’d have paid the old gal $500 in a heartbeat. The rifle was pristine WW2 era.

To which haters are you referring? To those who hate the direction in which our soon-to-be-former-republic-if-we’re-not vigilant is being taken by acolytes of Marx, Cloward/Piven and Soros? Those who hate the fact that there are many who would refuse to execute the guilty for horrendous crimes but insist that the innocent may be slaughtered for the “crime” of being inconvenient? Those who hate having hard-earned money taken from their pockets and “redistributed” to others who have done nothing to earn it, and who will do nothing to improve their own lot in life except vote “D” for more free stuff? Maybe those who hate the fact that much of our media distorts or refuses to cover stories that will reflect badly on a particular political party or upon a protected demographic, truth be damned?
