Charles Krauthammer: The media missed Romney’s overseas triumph
The National Post ^ | August 3, 2012 | Dr. Charles Krauthammer

Posted on 08/04/2012 2:20:19 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

At the outset of his recent foreign trip, Mitt Romney committed a gaffe. In answer to a question about the Olympics, he expressed skepticism about London’s preparations. The response confounded and agitated Romney supporters because it was such an unforced error. The question invited a simple paean to Olympic spirit and British grit, not the critical analysis of a former Olympic organizer.

Soon that initial stumble was transmuted into a metaphor for everything that followed. The mainstream media decided with near unanimity that the rest of the trip amounted to a gaffe-prone disaster.

Really? The Warsaw leg was a triumph. Romney’s speech warmly embraced Poland’s post-communist experiment as a stirring example of a nation committed to limited government at home and a close alliance with America abroad, even unto such godforsaken war zones as Afghanistan and Iraq, at great cost to itself and with little thanks.

Especially little from the Obama administration, which unilaterally canceled a Bush(43)-era missile-defense agreement with Poland to appease Russia. Without any overt criticism of the current president, Romney set out a foreign policy of radically greater appreciation of and fidelity to American allies.

Yet all we hear about Warsaw is the “gaffe”: two phrases uttered by an aide, both best described as microscopically rude. At The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a pack of reporters hurled questions of such journalistic sophistication as, “What about your gaffes?” To which Rick Gorka suggested that the reporters kiss his posterior, a rather charming invitation that would have made a superb photo op.

The other offense against human decency was Gorka’s correlative directive to “shove it.”

The horror! On the eve of the 2004 Democratic Convention, Teresa Heinz Kerry offered precisely that anatomically risky suggestion to an insistent Pittsburgh journalist....

The Romney camp needs to find a way around the “news” media to get his message directly to the people. Our leftist media will spin his message into something it isn’t to make him look bad whether he wins or not.

Wrong. It was no gaffe. It was an accurate and sensible question.

Krauthammer, liberals hate you, so no amount of parroting their lies will get you invited to any more parties.

"Look at how Romney was received. In Israel, its popular prime minister lavished on him a welcome so warm as to be a near-endorsement. In Poland, Romney received an actual endorsement from Lech Walesa, former dissident, former president, Cold War giant, Polish hero. Yet the headlines were “shove it” and “culture.”

"Scorecard? Romney’s trip was a major substantive success: one gaffe (Britain), two triumphs (Israel and Poland) and a fine demonstration of foreign policy fluency and command — wrapped, however, in a media narrative of surpassing triviality."

--- Charles Krauthammer

Thank you Mr. Krauthammer for some balance in reporting!

HIS OWN record, His KNOWN flip flopping, his backstabbing and being a KNOWN LIAR - makes Romney look bad. He's a POS anti-American, he always was and always will be.

Kraut gets it right.

Romney did well on that foreign trip. Unfortunately, as he is well aware, the Obama-loving media aren't going to say a good word about Romney but use every piddling little 'gaffe' or Romney statement they'll declare 'controversial to bash him with or, at the least, declare whatever he says or does as 'wrong' and 'a failure'. The fake polls they'll pay for will conveniently verify their preordained conclusion that Romney is a loser and everyone can't wait to re-elect Barack Hussein Obama, who is 'really working hard for the American middle class', blah, blah, blah, ad infinitum.

Romney has to use the internet, Fox News and any other venue he can to overcome the MSM assault on his candidacy. It's beyond frustrating that a president with the abysmal record Obama has can still be considered a possibility to win re-election but it is what it is and Romney has to deal with it - and overcome it. I think he will, as popular support for Obama is sinking fast and, unlike McCain, I believe that Romney actually wants to win. That, alone, is refreshing.

That may be, but you have two realistic choices for President, Romney or Obama. Who's it gonna' be?

Correction:

The ‘media’ IGNORED Romney’s overseas triumphs.

We need a complete ‘RESET’ button on the ‘media’ in the USA.

He was received well in Israel. A country and prime minister (and ally) constantly snubbed by O.

He was received well in Poland (another ally) and welcomed by Walesa. If my memory serves, Walesa and O have been on a giant “I hate you...no I hate you more” snub fest for the last couple of years.

The media could do no less than spin this for O. It is their shameful job.

I don’t always agree with Krauthammer, but he did a good job.

grow up
get over yourself

And, if you are an Obama supporter in disguise, here to cause trouble, I guess your posts make sense.

That's realistic to you - two of the same evil cloth?

Just bow and don't worry what those who put God first will do. Stay with the godless and you get what the godless WILL get and through that experience you will learn.

Their coverage of Romney’s speech at the NCAA was no better. Even our conservative-leaning paper announced in its headline that Romney’s listeners booed him, which did happen when he denounced Obamacare. However, the crowd also gave him a standing ovation at the conclusion of his speech.

With people like you, it looks like we'll enjoy another lovely four years of Zero. Thanks.

Oh, and yes, I do believe a Romney administration will be very different than what we've endured for almost 4 long years. Especially when we take the Senate and expand our hold on the House.

Grow up? LOL! What part of being a puppet for Romney is grown up? What part of being played with by the GOP is grown up? Mitt pulled you into his web of deception and now you can’t handle it because you are NOT grown up but political immature - the kind he preys on!

Hey, chump, you have NO IDEA what ‘grow up’ even means!

You should be nicer to FReepers.

No conservative could really support the author of
ObamaCARE, gay marriage, the BIGdigCOVERUP,
death panels, predators in grade school,
and who is also a failure, lost to McCain,
attacks conservatives, and hides when
conservative issues come up like Obama's
lack of birth certificate, TARP, and global warming.

Of the top 15 news web sites, 14 are liberal. Total monthly unique visitors for those 14 are 550 million. Only Fox news at 32 million monthly visitors is conservative. I monitor the headlines on Yahoo News, which alone has 110 million monthly visitors. Headlines run about 3 to 1 pro-Obama over Romney. Hopefully independent sites like FR counter the liberal mainstream web bias.

You guys never tell us what you propose to do, other than go down with the ship.

You just flail around striking your allies and helping your foes.
