“I know he was born in Canada so he cannot be President.”

After all of those threads regarding the natural-born citizen clause and how Marco Rubio and Bobby Jindal (and Mitt Romney! and Rick Santorum!) supposedly don’t meet the constitutional qualifications to be president (nor did President Chester Arthur or 1916 GOP presidential nominee Charles Evans Hughes), do you really want to stir *that* hornet’s nest now? : )

For the record, Ted Cruz was born in Canada while his parents were working for the oil industry there, but was a U.S. citizen at birth under federal law. I’m not sure if his father was already a U.S. citizen at such time, but even if he wasn’t, Ted’s mother was a U.S. citizen who had resided in the U.S. for more than 10 years, at least 5 of which were after having turned 14, so Ted met the legal criteria to be a U.S. citizen at birth. The prevailing interpretation of constitutional scholars for a couple of centuries now is that a person who is a U.S. citizen at birth under U.S. law is, ipso facto, a natural-born citizen of the United States.

But Ted Cruz isn’t running for president, he’s running for the Senate (which merely requires being a U.S. citizen for the past 9 years), and, as you mentioned, he would be a more natural fit for Attorney General or Supreme Court Justice (which don’t even require being a U.S. citizen).
