Bob Kerrey’s Senate bid is an uphill climb
Washington Post ^ | July 21, 2012 | Karen Tumulty

Posted on 07/22/2012 4:47:07 PM PDT by Seizethecarp

He was a heartland heartthrob: a Navy SEAL and Medal of Honor winner in Vietnam; a self-made millionaire; a brainy governor whose approval rating topped 70 percent; a Democrat who won a landslide election to the Senate in a year when Michael Dukakis failed to get even 40 percent of Nebraska’s vote for president. Oh, and he dated one of the biggest movie stars of the day, Debra Winger.

Now, after living in New York City for more than 10 years, Kerrey has returned and is trying to win back his old Senate seat. But it has been nearly two decades since his name last appeared on the general-election ballot in Nebraska, and his past glories here are as faded as those old campaign T-shirts. Even Leistritz said she does not know whether she will vote for him.

At the moment, Kerrey is running well behind a state senator, Deb Fischer, who stunned the Nebraska political establishment by defeating two better-funded and better-known candidates in the Republican primary in May.

Bob Kerrey needs to stay the heck out of politics. He thinks we have all forgotten his record and his past. We haven’t. He is also a war criminal as far as I am concerned: all those civilians that his outfit killed in Vietnam were no accident and the navy covered it up.

Oddly, the article never mentions why Deb Fischer won that primary, even though that should be relevant given their mention of her "two better-funded and better-known" primary opponents. Are they afraid to mention the momma grizzly powerhouse who turned that primary election around with one well-deserved endorsement? I'm not at all happy that my top choice stayed out of the presidential election this year, but I'm still wondering if it was the right decision. The far left media would have made her the only issue, one that they have sufficient control over to twist beyond recognition, instead of the economy as the central issue, where there are limits on how much they can lie. If republicans retake the Senate with conservative republicans, and win the White House (even if it's only Romney), I'll admit that she made the right call.

Looks like being a "heartland heartthrob" doesn't buy all that much in NYC.

I spent 15 months on the island (Hon Tre) where Bob did the event for which he was awarded the MOH. Now it has a very upscale resort with a tram connecting it to the mainland.

Bob Kerrey.. I remember they always said about him, “He talks like Ronald Reagan and votes like Teddy Kennedy.”
He’s been a sneaky, lying p.o.s. from the beginning.

Kerrey was a popular Gov because 25 years ago he posed as a conservative Democrat, like many Nebraskans.

He doesn’t get a free ride because he is a former seal any more than Tom Osborne (former Congressman, legendary Cornhuskers football head coach) got a free ride when he supported illegals getting free college tuition. He was promptly booted by the voters for this.

I am happy that Kerrey is losing. I have alot of pride in Nebraskans and their values. It was a great place to grow up.

Are the Libs making Deb Fischer out to be a psycho like they did with Sharon Angle or Christine O’Donnell?

It seems like a formula they enjoy using to make female tea party candidates look like lunatics.

Remember the days after Fischer won the primary and surprised the pundits? The media whores were all wetting themselves with glee about how Kerrey had a real chance to win the seat because the right wingers had nominated a TEA party candidate.

“a self-made millionaire; Bob did not become a millionaire by himself..”

No one is a “self-made millionaire” unless they EARNED that money long before they were subject to bribes.

They are waiting to choose their targets, but she might make the list. They can only get away with trashing one or two republicans per election. Palin was the 2008 target. Angle and O’Donnell were 2012, and they plan to choose carefully for this election, based both on the available material and the competitiveness of the races. My guess: it'll be women they portray as unstable. Liberals "love" women the same way they "love" blacks and Hispanics - under the government's thumb and dependent. The far left hates strong, successful women even more than they hate successful minorities.

While I honor Bob Kerrey's Medal of Honor military service to our nation... I would not vote for him even if the Democrats held an AR-15 to my head.

Kerrey’s wife, former “Saturday Night Live” writer Sarah Paley, describing Nebraskans as though they were an alien species to someone with New York sensibilities.

“The Midwest is a strange land for an Easterner of my ilk,” Paley wrote. “Midwesterners even have their own language. They say ‘pop’ for soda, ‘sack’ for bag, ‘billfold’ for wallet. They do not worry. They do not suffer from guilt.”

What the hell is wrong with that?? She sounds like a snot.
