Video: Romney booed at NAACP for pledging to repeal ObamaCare
Hotair ^ | 07/11/2012 | Ed Morrissey

Give Mitt Romney a lot of credit, first for agreeing to appear at the NAACP convention at all. Barack Obama won't make an appearance this year; he's sending Joe Biden instead. Romney had decided to focus on the economy, but part of that focus dealt with eliminating expensive and wasteful government spending --- including ObamaCare, which he pledged again to repeal. The result? A cascade of boos:

“I will eliminate expensive non-essential programs like Obamacare, and I will work to reform and save Medicare and Social Security, in part by means-testing their benefits,” Romney said, according to prepared remarks.

The crowd was not amused.

Romney got light applause from the crowd when the promised to “defend traditional marriage,” a position that put him at odds with both President Obama and the NAACP.

We can see a smile break out on Romney’s face, and for good reason. This gives him all sorts of instant credibility on the Right and in the middle. The middle will be pleased to see that Romney went to the convention at all, in the face of overt hostility, plus the NAACP audience comes across as a bit immature. The Right has doubted Romney’s commitment to repealing ObamaCare at times, but this shows that Romney is willing to repeat that pledge anywhere, even when it’s guaranteed to turn the audience against him.

So now, the focus should shift to Obama. Will he defend his flip-flop on gay marriage at Focus on the Family? His changing tax positions at the Chamber of Commerce? Obamanomics at an Americans for Prosperity convention?

Ok, President Obama. Romney went into NAACP lion’s den. When will YOU venture outside your bubble? cc @davidaxelrod @messina2012

I’d guess … no.

Update: Credit where it’s due — the NAACP convention audience gave Romney a standing ovation at the end.

He received a standing O at the end of the speech. Not that it matters.

But I just heard Rush say that Romney got a standing Ovation at the end of his speech.

Why pander to a group who you won’t get 5% of their vote?

Pray for America

“...plus the NAACP audience comes across as a bit immature.”

:::::::::::::::

Not just immature, but stupid and ignorant as is the case for ANYONE who would vote in this country for someone like Obama — specifically just because he is (part) black.

I wonder if they realize what they look like to caring, patriotic Americans?

Courageous to even show up there.
Like Holder showing up at a NRA convention.

Does anyone believe that black Americans will ever vote for sanity and economic recovery? They vote for racist reasons and nothing about the facts will change their minds.
I give Romney credit for showing up and honestly presenting his views on Obamacare. I’d like to see Obama show up at a Tea Party meeting - never happen...

Like Holder showing up at a NRA convention.

I'm sure the NRA crowd would be much more respectful towards Holder than the NAA(L)CP was to Romney.

Romney is willing to go behind enemy lines and say what he really believes.

Also? Romney gets free media doing this.

Not a bad move at all.

I don’t think it’s Pandering when you get booed by the group. I didn’t read Romney’s complete speach, but from what I gathered, he did a decent job. Will it flip the black vote? Doubtful. Will it flip a small amount? Maybe.

I’ll have to listen to the speach, but from the quotes it sounds like he didn’t pander to the audience on Obamacare. So I’d agree, good move on his part and I respect it.

The only one-up would be a plea to the audience to help do away with the racist CBC. Or at least ask that the bigots be replaced and that an IQ above room temperature be required for the caucus. But hey, one step at a time.

Meanwhile, think about the reaction if candidate Obama in 2008 had been booed like that while addressing a bunch of white conservatives. The black community would have gone ballistic.

I think it’s unwise to show up there. Should he speak to CPUSA? What’s the difference?

To show what a coward Obama is to not appear at the same conference....we should start calling him Bubble Boy because he will not be publicly confronted!
