Many in the West think that the partly neutered Islam that we have been seeing for about a century is the true Islam. The European powers colonized all the Muslim countries and so established secular governments along with western style universities bringing some more modern thought. But underneath this think veneer of western civilization lurked the age old violence and ignorance of Islam. They never took the power away from the mullahs, that is what they should have done.
