British jiu-jitsu expert grabs Central Park 'snatcher' before New Yorkers could lay a hand on him
NY Post ^ | July 7, 2012 | BILL SANDERSON

A tough-as-nails jiu-jitsu expert made such quick work of a purse snatcher in Central Park Thursday, a group of other would-be crime-stoppers could only stand by and watch his martial artistry.

Gaston Cavalleri, a 32-year-old British tourist, used his skills to hold 16-year-old accused crook Charles Williams until cops came.

Unfortunately for Williams, Cavalleri had studied jiu-jitsu at one of the world’s best schools in Brazil — meaning he needed about as much help as Batman would have needed from a group of Gothamites.

Officers were on the scene within minutes

When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

Sadly, if he’d pulled the same stunt in his native country, he’d probably have been arrested for assault and the mugger would be suing him for compensation...

Very true. Over there native Brits now have to take off their pants for their new arrivals - at least if the new arrival-type wants that particular pair of pants.

...and they don’t mind, at all, since it is MUCH BETTER (to them) than the violent gun culture of America.

How can you tell it’s summer in the city? The usual tourists getting mugged and/or raped at night in Central Park. Either put more cops in the park or close it after dark!

Don’t get me wrong, in theory he could have detained the criminal perfectly legally without breaking the law, but the law of ‘citizens arrest’ is so complicated and misunderstood that the average citizen would have done it illegally by failing to properly inform the suspect of his rights etc so in practice, the criminal would probably have said ‘but I hadn’t done nuffink’ and accused him of assaulting his innocent self, and because the police have had their discretionary powers of deciding whether or not to arrest eroded, they would have been forced to arrest him for assault.

Best thing to do under those circumstances (if it had happened in Britain) would have been to just fight the criminal off, let him get away and report him to the police in the hope that he would be arrested by them later...

I’d still say he better head back to the UK before the Grand Jury convenes.

I performed a citizen’s arrest once (a VERY drunk driver who was broken down on the side of the Interstate and was trying to drive away). A Nevada Highway Patrol officer finally showed up, cuffed him, put him in the back of his car, and suggested the citizen’s arrest since he hadn’t witnessed the suspect’s activity but I had (long, rather harrowing story). He said all I had to do was look in the direction of the guy (a good 20 feet away inside a closed car) and say “you’re under arrest”. I did so. He was later convicted.

Not much point in that, we have an extradition treaty with the US that means they could drag his butt back to America without even having to present prima facie evidence.
He’d have to go back to Brazil for ‘training’ reasons and live there...

Wouldn’t have happened in Britain. In Britain you actually have to witness an indictable offence (roughly equivalent to a felony) in order to be able to arrest someone. And you have to inform them exactly why you are arresting them. You would need witnesses to back you up when you say you saw the offence committed, and God help you if you injure them in the process.

A sworn constable on the other hand (i.e. a police officer) only has to suspect someone of committing an offence (whether summary (misdemeanor) or indictable in order to effect an arrest, and as long as they don’t screw up the arrest or the reasons for it too egregiously, they will have a lot more legal protection for not doing it correctly (although the police constabulary as a body might be held civilly liable and the officer’s boss might go apes**t at the officer for screwing it up).

Hm... I wonder if this could be argued in Zimmerman’s trial.

Interesting. I note from the way you spell “offence” that you are from either Australia, Canada, or Great Britain.

Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting. Well, for example, the other day I went downtown and into a shop.

I was only there for about 5 minutes, and when I came out, there was a cop writing out a parking ticket. I said to him, 'Come on, man, how about giving a retired person a break'? He ignored me and continued writing the ticket.

I called him a 'Nazi.' He glared at me and wrote another ticket for having worn tires.

So I called him a 'doughnut eating Gestapo.' He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he wrote a third ticket.

This went on for about 20 minutes. The more I abused him the more tickets he wrote.

Personally, I didn't care. I came downtown on the bus, and the car that he was putting the tickets on had a bumper sticker that said, 'I ♥ Obama.' I try to have a little fun each day now that I'm retired. It's important to my health.

Semper Fi.

Not original with me. I saw it posted on another thread and the donut comment offered an opportunity to insert it here.

This impresses me as a great opportunity for some entrepreneur. That is, offer “adventure tours” to British men who want some “action” against criminals.

Of course they would need to keep the travel service discreet, but they could offer “tours” of selected ‘hot spots’ in some parts of the US.

Now granted, there are still far too many gun control laws in the US, but if a tourist is a skilled martial artist, has a knife for back up, as well as a gun armed “guide” to watch over him, it could be quite an expedition.

I LOVE IT!!! The idea of using Stand-Your-Ground laws to beat the crap of these dudes that think they’re bad-ass. I can list off a bunch of neighborhoods here in Houston where the people need a little ‘lesson’.
