Does it dawn on any of them that McCain tried the same gambit and a lot of women absolutely hated the idea?

Personally, I think this is a diversion. I’d almost guarantee that it won’t be a woman. Consider:

1984- Mondale chooses a woman veep and got smoked in the fall.
2008 - Hillary seems to be the unquestioned frontrunner among Democrats but they wind up burying her and choosing Obama.
2008 - McCain chooses Palin as a woman Veep and gets smoked.

I realize there were a lot of other issues at play but it could be that choosing a woman nominee is electoral poison.

Sorry to break your bubble, but Palin was heading for victory until McCain toned her down.

Just saying.

McCain lost. Palin didn’t.

I agree. It will be either McDonnell or Portman.

1984--An extreme liberal chooses an extreme liberal woman veep and gets smoked by an extremely popular conservative president

2008--An extreme liberal, Hillary, gets torpedoed by an another extreme liberal by means of alleged voter fraud and other primary irregularities.

2008--A liberal McCain chooses conservative Palin and immediately sees his popularity increased and fundraising efforts bear more fruit.

The conclusions are 1. a conservative woman is a greater help to a candidacy than a liberal woman, and 2. conservatism, whether actual or perceived, is more important than liberalism.

I realize you weren’t here at the time, but during the 2008 campaign, the only time Senator McCain had a prayer of beating then Senator Obama was between his choosing Governor Palin as his running mate and his suspending his campaign to rush back and “fix” the economic crash that Mr. Soros ginned up to insure that the Democrats would win. Gov. Palin didn’t fail Sen. McCain, he did that all by himself. As to your other examples, Vice President Mondale never had a prayer against President Reagan, no matter who his second banana might’ve been, and Hillary was up against the Chicago machine, Howard Dean and the DNC, the Kennedy family, the Congressional Black Caucus, the racialist/civil rights machine, the media, massive white guilt, the hard left and academia. She never had a chance.
