Those contemptuous epithets and more were hurled by Republicans and conservatives at Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. moments after he single-handedly saved Obamacare, joining liberals on the bench to break a 4-4 tie.
The Supreme Court has abandoned us, Texas Gov. Rick Perry declared. Simply disappointing, Florida Gov. Rick Scott moaned. Activist court, Rep. Michele Bachmann cried.
Even Ari Fleischer, the former spokesman for George W. Bush, who appointed Chief Justice Roberts to the court, joined in. I miss Justice Harriet Miers, he whined.
But they all miss the point, and, more, by looking purely at the political, miss the forest for the trees.

Thanks for the laugh, your Photoshop skills are excellent.
To call him a coward is not to demonize him - I am talking about the nasty attacks.
Coward may fit the bill, I just don’t know right now.
In honest fact and whether we like it or not, Hildy, we don’t really have much choice but to take this and turn it against Obama and the Democrats ... and hard. Stoke the anger into a white hot coal and channel it into a Congress and White House that can and will overturn it (and turn the tide on the USSC while they’re at it). Elections still count when it comes to Congress, the White House, the States, and taxation.
This liberal POS Roberts just gave the liberals the way to control us , just call every mandate a tax.
This wasnt just a tax, it was a mandate, the government forcing us to buy something. This is the end of freedom. That is unconstitutional so Roberts rewrites the law to make it a tax so he can vote for it. that is impeachable because these justices cant rewrite laws all they can say is yes or no. This is the end of freedom not about just a tax( which is bad enough anyway).
This is the end of liberty, the end of freedom. The federal government now has unlimited power to force anyone of us to buy anything not to mention that with this Obamacare they can control every part of our lives now
Be of good cheer- McCain and Sarah didnt win in 08.
And by God we can stop Mitt to!
Negatory. The talking point for November will be that it is not Obama’s tax, it’s republican Roberts on the Supreme Court who turned this into the largest tax increase in world history. And they, along with the media, will most definitely make it stick.
It wasn’t a tax until Republican Roberts made it a tax. Poor Obama, he’s just trying to help but the evil repuglican Roberts, protecting his buddies I’m BigPharma and the evil insurance companies, made sure that working class Americans get the bill.
That’s the media talking point and if you don’t think that will stick, you’re dreaming.
We need to stop this delusional search for the pony in the pile of crap and face reality.
“But you have to let reason in, and ask yourself why the hell would he have done that? - and calling him some yellow belly communist, as some here have done, is immature and intellectually shallow. John Roberts is NOT a liberal. He may not be as conservative as some of us hoped/thought, but he has been a very solid conservative vote on the court. You cant argue with that just because hes not voted with Scalia 100% of the time. Hes not some social liberal either. There is an explanation out there for why he ruled as he did, we just arent sure of it yet.”
Pretty simple. It would have been a 5-4 decision reversing the biggest progressive coup of the last century. Even more controversial than Bush v. Gore. Roberts cares more about the prestige of the Court than he does about the Constitution. The Court’s prestige is not unimportant; but if it punts every time things get rough, judicial review is meaningless.
It’s funny how Roberts justified his vote for Obamacare by claiming it was a tax, when Obama himself obviously made no such argument when he campaigned for its passage. It’s like the five justices were bending over backwards to look for an excuse to let this law stand.
And all of this is to help Romney? Really?
Amen, FRiend!
Actually, what Roberts did was hand obama and the dems a widcat to deal with....the largest tax increase on EVERYONE in history.
Some here might be selling out Roberts a bit too early....time will tell.
What a load of rubbish.
It’s like claiming Pearl Harbor was a victory because we forced the Japanese to overextend themselves.
The chattering class very much wants to find the sunshine and flowers in this "learning moment." Tyranny moves fast.
One slim day, the first Tuesday in November, separates us from a shooting war. There are too many of us who will not live as slaves.
Go read the dissenting opinions and you will understand what happened here. roberts deserves to be impeached and he may have delt a lethal blow to the republic. Wait until you or a member of your family is refused healthcare. My mother-in-law’s sister died three weeks ago. The British health care authorities told her at age 72, she did not qualify for the life saving procedure that she needed. She went home and died three weeks later. It is coming here and roberts made it possible.

Hi Sandy,
Just read the dissenting opinions and you will know exactly what to think. There are trustworthy Justices that wrote dissenting opinions and they were there and they are brilliant and they tell us what was wrong with this decision and it is vast and deep.

Roberts decided to go with Kagan instead of Scalia....that’s all that needs to be said.
Maybe Justice Roberts is playing chess, and everybody else is playing checkers. If Obama gets re-elected he could appoint as many as 3 more Supreme Court Justices, which would totally devastate the court for years to come. By doing what he did, two thirds of the voters who are opposed to Obamacare will be energized for the November election, thus virtually guaranteeing Obama’s defeat. Roberts may have put the final nail in the coffin for Obama’s re-election chances.
I certainly like the sound of that, for more reason than one.
I was really disappointed in Roberts today, as I think quite a lot of him in general (despite the disastrous immigration ruling...) - and I had the expectation that he would torch Obamacare today.
But if he helps win the war, this battle won’t matter.
