Army soldier who allegedly shot, killed his battalion commander at Fort Bragg was facing court martial.
So the Soldier had been caught doing something illegal, and was probably going to lose money, rank, or both, and possibly face jail time and discharge.
The Army lets people who have been caught breaking the law “hang out” with the rest of the unit, go to work everyday, etc, while they await trial.
The even let people on charges for child pornography or drug distribution stay within the unit on some level and go about their business and interact as normal.
A Soldier here in Missouri had federal charges on him for child porn and was awaiting trial. He wasn’t even barred from attending Company parties where children and families were present, as he was innocent until proven guilty. A St Louis newspaper reported he went AWOL in January 2012.
It is puzzling how the Army does this. I am really surprised incidents do not happen more often...Soldier facing charges and working closely with the people that are prosecuting him, knowing he will soon have his life taken away. It isn’t the fault of the Chain of Command the Soldier is facing charges, it his own, but often they do not see it that way.
Very sad.
