INDIANAPOLIS - Following a four-month investigation by Eyewitness News, the IRS has announced a major change designed to reduce fraud by undocumented workers who file tax returns.

Beginning immediately, the IRS says applications for Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) must include original documentation, such as passports or birth certificates, to prove identity and foreign citizenship. ITINs are issued to people who are not eligible to obtain a social security number, and they allow noncitizens to file tax returns with the IRS.

The IRS says it is making the change to strengthen its ITIN application requirements, and today's announcement comes after 13 Investigates exposed how the IRS's ITIN system is plagued by abuse and fraud.

Isn’t denying illegals their chance to defraud the government racist?

So how many of these instances of rationality are we going to see and when will they end?

It is as if they feel the noose closing and are trying to not get hung. They are like the Nazis at the end of the war. Everybody’s friend, obsequious to the point of just repulsive, guilty as hell.

Hang them. I don’t want to just win. I want retribution.

IRS senior spokesman Terry Lemons offered this statement late Friday:

"Today's announcement reflects another step in the IRS's far-reaching effort to protect the integrity of the tax system and combat non-compliance and fraud.

What a *pantload*. None of WTHR's findings were a surprise to the IRS. They just weren't going to do anything until they were embarrassed by a local TV crew. Does anyone seriously believe this "far-reaching effort" came about because of the IRS's initiative?

The IRS is spending its efforts hounding honest Americans and gearing up to confiscate our assets as a consequence of not being able to afford insurance thanks to ObamaCare.

The shocker for me isn’t WTHR’s findings, it’s that there appear to be journalists out there actually practicing journalism.

In other words, the IRS is going to start following it's own rules ?

"Attach a valid federal income tax return, unless you qualify for an exception, and include your original, notarized, or certified proof of identity and foreign status documents."

so, how is the IRS going to determine if the documents contain false information ?

Something is going on at WTHR, the local NBC affiliate. they normally just regurgitate Democrat propaganda and agitprop verbatum, but this is the 2nd time in as many months that they have gone after huge abuse.

Prior to this was exposing how much Indiana Food Stamp money was being spent in Casinos, and at Disney.
(Appalling amounts).

I worked the volunteer tax program a few years ago. I was amazed at how many young Hispanics, not yet citizens, who had spouses who “have ITINs, but can’t find them right now”. We were told we weren’t enforceers and just complete the tax returns.
