Louise Mensch, the MP whose children were threatened by an internet troll says social networking sites must identify the internet bullies who 'cower behind anonymity.'
Last week Frank Zimmerman, 60, narrowly escaped jail for sending the Corby MP an email branding her the 'slut of Twitter' and threatening that she faced a "Sophie's Choice"a reference to a novel in which heroine Sophie has to choose between the life of her son or daughter at a Nazi concentration camp.
Zimmerman was found guilty earlier this week and given a suspended jail sentence.
Writing in The Daily Telegraph, Mensch said: "I felt helpless and attacked. The nature of the internet is that you dont know who is behind the screen. Is it Zimmerman, with his filthy house and his record of targeting women online? Or is it some demented teenager with a gun?"
Mensch described how she was forced to arrange security for her family but the abuse only got worse.
"Over the course of the next couple of weeks, Zimmerman escalated his campaign. He rang me: I knew it was him right awaythe well-spoken, English voice, the menaceand hung up. He sent emails from various fake accounts, pretending to be a duke, a doctor, a student. He researched obscure material about my husbands former address and even about my novelist sister."
The MP has called on internet providers to identify those behind trolling and says prosecutors must take the problem more seriously.
