Holder: DOJ Will ‘Vigorously Use’ Voting Rights Act Against States ^ | June 7, 2012 | Matt Cover

Posted on 06/07/2012 10:58:22 AM PDT by

( – Attorney General Eric Holder told the House Judiciary Committee Thursday that the Justice Department will “vigorously use” anti-Jim Crow provisions in the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to prevent some southern states from purging ineligible voters from their rolls and enacting voter-I.D. laws.

"It is the position of this Department of Justice and certainly this Attorney General that we will vigorously defend and vigorously use Section 5. The need for it is still there."

Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act requires several southern states and counties in states such as California and Florida to get federal “pre-clearance” before they change any voting eligibility laws or voting requirements or procedures.

Originally, the provision was designed to combat the legacy of racist Jim Crow laws passed in some states to prevent black people from voting.

Although Holder stressed the "need" to “vigorously use” Section 5, he did not say which states he thinks are pursuing racist policies that require Justice Department interference.

The Justice Department recently cited Section 5 in a letter to the state of Florida ordering it to stop an ongoing effort to purge ineligible voters from its rolls, focusing on illegal immigrants in particular. Five Florida counties are required to gain pre-clearance from Justice under Section 5.

Justice also blocked a South Carolina voter-I.D. law in December 2011, saying it violated Section 5’s prohibition on racially discriminatory voting laws. In March 2012, the department also blocked a Texas voter-I.D. law again saying that the requirement that people show a photo-I.D. to vote was racial discrimination.

The corrupt scumbag Holder speaks on behalf of the most corrupt and sleazy justice department in history.
I love it that Florida’s Governor Scott told Ubama and his pack of race-hustling scumbags to go play in the street.

This is an important development … in 2000 the Florida margin in Bush v. ALGORE was only 537 votes

Send Gov Scott an email showing your support

“If the effect of the NVRA (Motor Voter) is to force a state to allow never-eligible non-citizens the opportunity to vote,” he wrote, “then the statute might violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution, which guarantees that the right to vote cannot be denied by a dilution of the weight of a citizen’s vote.”

As for the Voting Rights Act claim, Detzner wrote, Florida already received federal permission to remove noncitizens, which is clearly spelled out in Florida law.

What’s more, the Voting Rights Act applies to only five Florida counties — Monroe, Hillsborough, Collier, Hardee and Hendry — and not the other 62 in Florida, including Miami-Dade, where about 1,600 of the 2,700 potential noncitizens were initially identified by the state in a database created by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

About 500 people in Miami-Dade have been found to be lawful citizens and voters, and 13 noncitizens have been found. Two of them might have voted and could face prosecution. The county has been unable to verify the citizenship of more than 1,100 others.

Assuming the purge halts, those people could vote this year — even if some are noncitizens.

"Not a single eligible voter as far, as I know, has been removed from the voter rolls," Scott said Wednesday on WNDB radio in Daytona Beach, according to a News Service of Florida transcript. "Not one. And we’re working to keep it that way."

"Their vote should not be diluted by people who don’t have the right to vote," Scott said. "We need to be reviewing our voter rolls and making sure only those individuals who have the right to vote … are voting."

“This hardly seems like an approach earnestly designed to protect the integrity of elections and to ensure that eligible voters have their votes counted,” said the letter, written by Scott’s hand-picked secretary of state, Ken Detzner, a fellow Republican.

Detzner also submitted a list of four questions that he wants the DOJ to answer:

Seems like the dems think blacks can do nothing for themselves and must be led to the polls and have their hands held and even told how they should, and even must vote.

I always thought blacks, like everyone else, should be responsible enough to do those things themselves.

Who are the racists among us again?

If Obama loses this election, the administration just may try to use the VRA to disallow electors which go to the challenger.

Wow. Let’s all keep our powder dry.

The Left thinks that anything they don't like is “racist”.

They need Mandy Patinkin to tell them that “I don't think that word means what you think it means”

“and even told how they should, and even must vote.”

Just go in, get the butterfly ballot, and punch the third one down.

The civil rights and voting acts beginning from 1866 through 1965 were all sponsored by Republicans and fiercely (sometimes violently) opposed by Democrats.

The fact that he would site this in regards to keeping illegals and dead people off the voting rolls is so ludicrous it’s criminal.

Cowardly, aisle-crossing, career-minded weaklings infesting the Republican party, who had their alleged manhood removed in the middle-of-the night by the Gonad Fairy.

What the hell does voter I’d laws I’d have to do with jim crow? Impeach this SOB. This is blatant politicization of the DOJ.

I volunteer at our local Hospice. Today I noticed that patients must have a legal ID—like a driver’s license. I guess you even need a photo ID to die, but not one to vote!

The Left thinks that anything they don't like is “racist”.

I'm not sure this is true. They have, however, found that an accusation of "racism" successfully causes their opponents to stop arguing.
