In 2008, then-Superintendent of Schools Linda McCulloch defeated incumbent Secretary of State Brad Johnson by about 5,300 votes out of over 470,000 cast, with a conservative third-party candidate winning nearly 12,000 votes. We need more Secretary of States, which George Soros made a point of targeting in 2006 and 2008.

The Danies/Gillan House race may have repercussions beyond this year. In 2014, Max Baucus is up for reelection and is unpopular due to ethics lapses. Term-limited Governor Brian Schweitzer is thinking of running even if Baucus doesn’t retire and Republicans currently don’t have any first-tier potential candidates. A decisive win by Daines would change that.
