Bozeman business executive Steve Daines won the Republican primary Tuesday night in the race for Montana’s open U.S. House seat, while state Sen. Kim Gillan of Billings staked out a solid lead in the seven-person field in the Democratic primary.

With more than half the precincts partially reporting, Daines led the three-way Republican primary with 71.5 percent of the vote, beating out Eric Brosten of Helena, who had 18 percent, and Vincent Melkus of Hardin, who had 10 percent.

Gillan led the Democratic primary with 31 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary, followed by state Rep. Franke Wilmer of Bozeman at 19 percent.

The winner of the two primaries will face off this fall for Montana’s only U.S. House seat, which is being vacated by U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg, a Republican who’s running against incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Tester.

Libertarian David Kaiser of Victor also will be on the fall ballot in the House race.

In Montana, the Jon Tester/Denny Rehberg U.S. Senate race is the Big Enchilada, but this race matters, as well.

Another big race is in Montana is the race for Secretary of State. In 2008, then-Superintendent of Schools Linda McCulloch defeated incumbent Secretary of State Brad Johnson by about 5,300 votes out of over 470,000 cast, with a conservative third-party candidate winning nearly 12,000 votes. We need more Secretary of States, which George Soros made a point of targeting in 2006 and 2008.

I wield a mean search engine.

As for the Presidential election, I think that if Obama is reelected, the nation’s very survival is in danger. I have no idea how the November vote will go.

That’s a certainty.

I was nervous over Wisconsin tonight.

Nov. 6 is going to be very stressful.

The Danies/Gillan House race may have repercussions beyond this year. In 2014, Max Baucus is up for reelection and is unpopular due to ethics lapses. Term-limited Governor Brian Schweitzer is thinking of running even if Baucus doesn’t retire and Republicans currently don’t have any first-tier potential candidates. A decisive win by Daines would change that.

In Montana it will be badly.

Fingers crossed for a statewide sweep.
