Climate change could wipe out butterfly populations
Summit County Voice ^ | June 2, 2012 | by Bob Berwyn

Global warming is expected to result in localized extinctions of up to one-third of all butterfly species.

A recently published study concluded that butterflies which tend to emerge later in the year or fly higher in the mountains are probably more vulnerable becayse they have evolved to deal with a shorter window of opportunity to reproduce.

The findings have implications beyond just the survival of individual butterfly species, since their absence or presence has effects on pollination and other functions of herbaceous ecosystems.

“Insects and plants are at the base of the food pyramid and are extremely important, but they often get less attention when we are studying the ecological impacts of climate change,” said Javier G. Illa-Wanker, with the Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society at Oregon State University.

The research was done by Illa-Wankers’s group in the Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid. It examined 32 butterfly species for five years at various elevations in a Mediterranean mountain range, and the delays in flight dates that occurred as a result of elevation change.

I see a big fat “could” in that headline. These alarmists are pathetic money grubbing whores.

Yes, I know, I've already seen them. Unfortunately, there appears to be a shortage of wasps, haven't seen any this year, not a single one. I also use insecticide sparingly since it also kills the good insects. But I do have lots of mockingbirds so maybe it will all balance out.

However, global warming will stop people from tramping through the woods on snowshoes, end ice fishing and put snowmobile makers out of business so isn’t that a net positive for the environmentalist whackos?

If globull warming threatened to wipe out roaches or yellow jackets I'd be in favor of it!

Many people would like us to wipe out all viruses too.

However, without cockroaches and viruses, life on Earth would cease to exist.

ALL those problems could be eliminated if we just wiped out the human species.

Heh, I think that would be the preferred approach of the enviroweenies, who do view humans as polluting vermin.

Except for themselves, of course.

The enviroweenies are just commie collaborators. It is the ruling elite who want you to quit breathing their air and eating their food.

Cockroaches are important, as are many creatures. Mostly to the food chain.

VIRUSES are the really important 'death' forms. (I would have said life-form,but VIRUSES aren't ALIVE unless there is food).

Guess what 'form' of creature was the FIRST on planet Earth (as far as we can tell)?

How do you 'kill' a creature that spends much of it's time DEAD?

Agreed, working in tandem with a lot of useful idiots.

Thanks for the response.

The only useful thing that will happen if the commie/socialists take COMPLETELY over, the useful idiots and collaborators will be the first ones lined up against the wall and shot.

After all, they proved they can't be trusted. They turned against their own 'countrymen'.

I pair the boxes. I read somewhere a while ago that having a swallow and BB boxed nearby is better (they work together to protect the area). In my case I had BB’s in one and a chickadee in the other.

Here is a list of unproven assertions that I believe are politically-inspired lies to prop up the advance of socialism:

1. If there is climate change, then 2/3 of the butterfly species will die.

2. If there is climate change, it means that it is caused by human activity.

3. If climate change will cause 2/3 of the butterfly species to die, it means we must stop burning fossil fuel, even if climate change is unrelated to the burning of fossil fuel.

4. There is significant climate change at this time.

And BTW, 99% of all species that have ever lived are extinct.
