The finance director of state House Speaker Christopher Donovan's campaign for Congress has been charged with conspiring with others to conceal the source of $20,000 in campaign contributions.
Federal prosecutors on Thursday announced that 33-year-old Robert Braddock Jr. of Meriden was arrested and charged Wednesday in an alleged conspiracy ...
Prosecutors allege Braddock and unnamed co-conspirators arranged $10,000 in payments from conduit contributors to Donovan's campaign for the 5th District seat in connection with proposed legislation this year.
The purpose of the conduit contributions was to conceal that the individuals who were actually financing the payments had an interest in legislation introduced in the state General Assembly during the 2012 legislative session, said U.S. States Attorney David B. Fein said in a statement. The candidate is also a current member of the General Assembly, Fein said. (SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE)
The legislation would have deemed roll-your-own smoke shop owners to be tobacco manufacturers under state law, which would have subjected these shop owners to a substantial licensing fee and tax increase, Fein said. The Joint Committee on Finance, Revenue and Bonding voted in favor of the bill on April 3, Fein said. The complaint says the potential enactment of that bill prompted Braddock and his co-conspirators to arrange a $10,000 payment to the campaign ... In early May, the complaint alleges, a co-conspirator who had helped arrange the initial campaign contributions stated in a series of recorded telephone calls with another co-conspirator, who was an aide to the campaign, that he and others were prepared to make an additional $10,000 payment following the defeat of the roll-your-own legislation, Fein said. On May 9, the legislative session ended without the legislation being called for a vote ...
Several days later, the complaint alleges that the co-conspirator delivered $10,000 payment ...

Often, the best news is made by the worst people.
Donovan is now toast in the AUG primary. Lefty feminist pro-gay Elizabeth Esty should now be the favorite in the primary vs. Roberti. She raises big money, but seems 2nd tier to me.
FOUR GOP candidates in the primary.
Only took SIX paragraphs to mention his party ID!
Boy’s not so mellow yellow no more!

Thank you for noting that fact! I didn’t read to the link but certainly noticed the same thing at the top of the thread. Predictable, isn’t it. We are reduced to counting down column to find Democrat affiliation and then it is not always to be found at all.
Demotion to the "Dear Abby" column for some drone reporter.

The finance director of state Liberal Democrat House Speaker Christopher Donovan's (Liberal Democrat) campaign for Congress has been charged with conspiring with others to conceal the source of $20,000 in campaign contributions.

I meant to put capital D in bold. House Speaker is always ‘D’ in CT where it is 97-D to 54-R in the House.
This is the old Nancy Johnson (Rino) seat. She lost to lefty Chris Murphy in 2006. An open, swing district that went strong for Foley 54% for GOV in ‘10. The most GOP of the 5 U.S. House seats. But full of small-town RINOs in Hartford burbs and NY border.
I am for Mark Greenberg (R), the true conservative in the GOP primary. How did Sandy Koufax get involved? This thread don’t need no pitchers.
of course Donovan ain’t no Liberal. He is certified Commie.
I am shocked the FEDS took this on. Hopefully this will do him in and may lead to other’s.
“Boys not so mellow yellow no more!”
On the other hand, ‘hail, Atlantis!’
I prefer Bernier (who’s young enough to run for the Senate eventually), but could live with Greenberg.
The CT-05 gave President Bush 49% in 2004, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Romney carried the CD this year. If you’re correct regarding the second- tier nature of the non-Donovan Dem candidates (as I assume you are), the I think the GOP has an above-average chancele of winning.
... I could live with Bernier.
This story is all the news on the local radio. Donovan is a dumb, charmless creep. So 2nd-tier is he, too. He comes across poorly in his campaign stump speech.
Eliz Esty lost her re-election campaign to the House. One-termer. And was passed over during the special election for state Senate (no primary allowed). She is well-known in feminist and gay circles. A “rising progressive star”. Who couldn’t get re-elected.
She raises money, though. Yalie.
This race would be more exciting if there were decent polling during primary season.
HAHAHAHAHHAHA.
Anyhow this is appears to be great news, increasing GOP odds of recapturing the seat any way you slice it. It would be nice to end the despicable GOP shutout in CT, especially if we elect someone resembling an actual Republican. New England House races were a big letdown in 2010.
This is helpful news and it increases our chances of a pickup. Republicans have a crowded field of viable candidates.
of course, I live in CT-5, which would be an exciting thing in my younger days. But, alas, I am busy and am hiding from the campaign action.
1. Wake me up when the primary is over.
2. If I get bored, I will do a blitz before the primary to defeat state Sen. Roraback.
Roraback, the endorsed GOP, is NARAL, voted for gay marriage and is the leading CT proponent of physician-assisted suicide.
Carrying on the proud tradition of Nancy Johnson and Chris Shays.
Actually he sounds worse, Dede Scuzzobama worse.
