The president referred to “Polish death camps” while awarding a posthumous Medal of Freedom to Polish professor Jan Karski, a hero of the anti-Nazi resistance. Poles believe they're blamed unfairly for the Nazi Holocaust, and the Foreign Minister led the outrage in a late night tweet.
The remark, which barely drew notice in America, is all over the Polish news today. On the country's largest television station:

The Poles are being unduly harsh on the guy. They probably assume that he has at least a rudimentary knowledge of history, which he does not.

Jan Karski was a Polish diplomat who brought word of the Holocaust in Poland to the western nations. For his work on trying to save the Jews of Poland, he was awarded the title of “Righteous Gentile” by the Vad Yashem Memorial organization, the highest civilian award Israel can give to those Christians and a couple Moslems who risked their lives to save Jewish lives in WW2.
An old friend of mine, Stefan Korbanski, one of the leaders of the Polish Free Army during WW2, was also the recipient of the “Righteous Gentile” award for his helping to smuggle arms and equipment into the Warsaw Ghetto so that the thousands of Jews trapped in it could resist the Germans, which they did for weeks despite overwhelming odds.
Both men were extraordinary human beings in a time when wild animals roamed the world.
And of course Obama never heard of either of them before this ceremony which he screwed up.

This ain’t gonna play well with Poles in Pennsylvania, Detroit, Chicago who tend to be blue collar Democrat union members who probably voted for him in 08. They take great pride in their Polish heritage and their Catholic faith. This, along with the recent abortion mandates for Catholic hospitals have got to be making some of them decide to either sit home or go for Romney in November.

Alex Storozynski, the President of the Kosciuszko Foundation, lauded the president earlier in the day for recognizing Karski, but now says “Karski would have cringed if he heard this…(SNIP)...President Obama’s remarks are already being called ‘scandalous’ by media outlets in Poland. Obama was seen reading this phrase off a teleprompter. The President must acknowledge his mistake and apologize for it. He must do it for Karski and the other Poles that risked their lives trying to stop the Holocaust.”
