MSNBC host Chris Hayes apologized Monday evening after outraging veterans by saying it makes him "uncomfortable" to describe all fallen soldiers as heroes.
The TV presenter made the controversial comment on the eve of Memorial Day, while kicking off a panel discussion on his show "Up With Chris Hayes" -- noting that it is "very difficult to talk about the war dead and the fallen without invoking valor, without invoking the words 'heroes.'"
Explaining why that makes him uneasy, he added, "I feel ... uncomfortable about the word hero because it seems to me that it is so rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war."
Former service members' group Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), in addition to conservative bloggers and organizations, slammed Hayes for being so conflicted about the term, FOX News reported.
VFW called Monday for an "immediate and unequivocal apology," branding his remarks "reprehensible and disgusting."
Hayes -- who during his Sunday show admitted his concerns might not be justified, while acknowledging there are definite individual examples of heroism -- released a statement later Monday saying he is "deeply sorry" for the gaffe.
"As many have rightly pointed out, it's very easy for me, a TV host, to opine about the people who fight our wars, having never dodged a bullet or guarded a post or walked a mile in their boots. Of course, that is true of the overwhelming majority of our nation's citizens as a whole," he said.

How’s that old saying go ? When you find that you’re digging yourself into a hole, put down the shovel ?
If he was truly sorry, he would commit suicide on air.
But he is perfectly comfortable with his head lodged in his anal orifice.
Because some gave the ultimate sacrifice, and get honored, that means we might want more war? His supporting "logic" is utterly bereft of any reason or common sense.
He saw what a stupid thing he said. He acknowledged it, apologized for it. I’ll give him that.
Still, he has no place being on the air. I wish no ill on him, but he should work elsewhere.
I agree. On a private human level, I’m glad he apologized. I don’t wish ill on him either, but he I don’t think he should keep his broadcasting job after this.
Very sad that his “apology” only comes AFTER complaints were made. It would have been more sincere if he made it immediately and on his own.
I attended a service today that was a complete repudiation of this klown’s screed. The unabashed references to God, country, and the heroes who gave their all in service to our nation.
Screw him - he’ll never appreciate what we have.
For whatever reason, this was my thought exactly.
The men and women he speaks of died for much less at times. I mean, this gutless gerbil-brain just crapped on the graves of millions of HEROES over time who died so we could live freely.
At the very least, he should hide in shame for a very long time. OFF the air.

Apology means nothing. . .this is what he actually believes. It was not a “gaffe”. . .he did not “misspeak”. . this is what this guy and his treasonous comrades at MSNBC actually believe. NO APOLOGY NECESSARY - NO APOLOGY NEEDED. . .JUST FROG MARCH ALL OF THEM TO LEAVENWORTH!!!
The man is an idiot. Any American soldier who dies in the service of his/her country is a hero. It does not matter what the justification for the war is. The politicians get us into the wars, The reason or justification for a particular war is solely the responsibility of our leaders, and those who died are on their souls.
The asswipe never states he is sorry for what he said.

Don’t care for how they contribute the ire coming from conservatives only.
Soldiers do what they do to preserve freedom for US ALL. Not just individuals part of one particular political persuasion.
Liberals know that — they just don’t want to give them credit for it.

Apparently he is intellectually incapable of separating the valor of our fighting men and women from the causative political considerations...
I must respect him for admitting his limitations publicly...
I suggest Mr. Hayes confine his further remarks regarding our HEROES to a simple occasional “thank you” as appropriate, and leave discussions of valor versus why we fight to people capable of understanding such things...
Insincere and self-serving IMHO. That said, I hope they don’t can him - he’ll be a ratings drain, and that’s a good thing.
And intelligent viewers are uncomfortable watching an idiot on the Leftist MSNBC, so they don’t watch. I’m proud to say that we have never seen this younger rendition of Keith Olberman.
