A month or so ago a retired from the business world successfully white woman shared this little chapter of her still nascent retirement with me. She wanted to continue contributing in some way to society so she looked into various volunteer programs and hooked up with one that put her in contact with pre-kindergarten aged youth.
The program was under the aegis of the Philadelphia School District’s various and sundry social services provided to the less fortunate.
She told me about a young black girl about five years old she was tending to. The youngster was on her lap as she fussed with the child’s hair and they talked. The little girl said she wanted hair like the woman’s. Upon being told that was unlikely the girl asked why and the woman explained black people had different kind of hair than hers.
Pressing further for more information about that, the little girl was told that was just a difference between black people and white people.
That took the conversation into another direction. The child denied the woman was white because white people were mean and bad people. After being assured the woman whose lap she was on and enjoying the company of was white the little girl ran away crying.
