Wild weekend: party on the Beach, police shooting on mainland
Miami Herald ^ | May 26, 2012 | DAVID SMILEY, LUISA YANEZ AND JULIE K. BROWN

The scene in South Florida was surreal Saturday.

On one side of the MacArthur Causeway, the side where police had braced for trouble, scantily clad men and women poured beer and testosterone into the streets, cafes and clubs, while thumping to the loud, restless beats of South Beach.

Meanwhile, on the mainland side of the causeway, allegedly the quiet side this weekend, a naked man was shot to death by police after he was found chewing on another man’s face.

Under the hot sun Saturday in South Beach, long before the nighttime partying began, revelers took videos, posed for photographs and sipped basketball-sized cocktails, strolling Ocean Drive for the annual hip-hop/rap extravaganza known as Urban Beach Week. The event, which traditionally draws upward of 250,000 people from all over the country and from all walks of life, is known as much for its over-the-top fun as it is for its music and celebrity mix.

Ladies in bikinis, fishnet dresses and barely-there bra tops strolled in throngs (and thongs), some of them daring enough to wear spiked heels. Men with low-riding shorts and jeans mingled on the strip, talking game and getting turned away more often than not.

Afro event.....
I no longer refer to these people as Black Americans, to me, now, they are AFRICANS. Regardless of where they were born.

Sad to say, because I grew up in the south and watched the freedom marches and sympathized with the people who had fought and served in the US military, but could not eat at the same lunch counter or drink from the same fountain. Those days are long gone, and I have no sympathy for the young thugs.

In fact I have met numerous immigrants from Angola, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, etc. who have more positive aspects to their manners and character than many so called African Americans.

Yes I agree totally and see it too. Most of them are just a better brand of character vs. many of our homegrown ingrates.

Sad but accurate - here’s my two cents, “broken record track”:

Why is it that legal immigrants from ALL countries of the world, typically, within JUST ONE GENERATION, have melded into the mainstream of this country, with college graduates and entrepreneurs contributing significantly to the GDP and IMPROVEMENT of this society, while multiple generations of the “minority” community continue to wallow in self pity and victimhood while continually taking any and all handouts in ever increasing amounts from the government, all of which are extorted from the ever shrinking producer class?

I watched an episode of “Bridezillas” at my parents’ apartment last week, and the most astounding thing was that, at the end of the episode, both the grooms went through with it.

I suppose the lawyer’s fiance could console himself with the thought that, since she’s accessorized with condoms, she *probably* won’t come back with an STD or pregnant with a stranger’s baby.

there's rather a dearth of guacamole

It's Miami, so we have sofrito instead of guacamole, and we can have several dozen dishes featuring black beans.

You can thank LBJ for that. The war on poverty has created something similar to the Palestinian Refugee camps, where generations of individuals live and die as victims of an invisible oppressor.

Rewarding people for indolence creates a people who thrive on it, but can survive nowhere else.

I hope that wacko lawyer gave an assumed name...I would not hire her to take care of a frigging speeding ticket!

For the rest of her career, potential clients who Google her name will find this article, and this FR thread ;-). You just have to wonder about people ... and even if her fiance doesn’t care, just think what his friends will say!

Funny this came up—Mr. Sg is soaking black beans at this very moment for some delectable surprise tomorrow.

Can someone please explain Jumbolaya to me?
What in the world was that?
My gut still has not forgiven me.

It appears that, if she gave her real name, she is a public defender. I wonder how that will go over....

Sorry it didn't sit well with you.

Among my fondest Scouting memories is a cold night eating jambalaya that had simmered in a cast iron Dutch oven for about six hours. Ichi was a Second Year Webelos and they almost called off the camp-o-ree because an unexpected cold front blew through on Saturday afternoon.

The adults couldn't eat as planned and the jambalaya was moved to a few coals to stay warm and simmer as we worked with the boys to prepare for the cold then went to an evening's activities as one leader stayed behind at the campsite to oversee the fire and the uneaten food.

That night, about 11 p.m., as the Scouts slept, we finally ate.

I recall the names of specific friends (some of whom I still Scout with today), sitting too close to a campfire that cooked my front, eating jambalaya, talking of the day and Scouting, my backside freezing from being turned away from the fire, swapping Robert W. Service poetry.

Jambalaya warms my spirit now as well as my belly.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience, Darks.

Could be something to do with that DNA stuff. I'm pretty certain not one of my ancestors could leap five feet in the air. Don't imagine my children will be able to either.

In it’s defence, it was military facility Jumbolaya.

I love black beans. After years of practicing Cuban cooking (waiting for Fidel Castro to die so we can have a “Fidelito Muerto” blowout), I make a very good bean dish.

I can imagine a felon appealing his conviction on the grounds that his publically-appointed counsel is universally known as a dimwitted trollop.

Jambalaya gives me the digestive agonies, sometimes, too. Maybe it’s the kind of sausage that goes in.

Sounds like the cannibal might have been smoking wet or PCP. That poison makes people do the craziest things. Naked, violent, crazy and feeling no pain are signs of PCP use.

The annual hip-hop/rap extravaganza

Rap extravaganza?

I'd go, but I can't find my body armor. I was so looking forward to it.
