A few weeks ago my family and I went to Lake Tahoe for a little snow skiing. We had a great time, except for some obvious "grade deflation" that occurred with the ski slopes. I skied some intermediate slopes and fell many times, indicating that the slopes were probably really expert skiers. Either that, or the laughably improbable alternative that I am not in as good shape as I was only a few years ago, when I could ski down expert slopes without any problems.
But during the trip, we drove across the state border from California to Nevada and back several times. Except for the different-colored license plates and the fact that smoking is still allowed in restaurants in Nevada, we would have never known the difference between the two states we drove through. The roads were just the same, the restaurants were just as overpriced, and the scenery was the same...and the ski slopes were just as incorrectly graded. Yet the times when we drove from California into Nevada, we drove from the highest-taxed state to one of the lowest-taxed states.
In fact, California currently has the third-highest state income tax in the nation, and the nation's highest sales and gasoline taxes. Meanwhile, Nevada has no state income tax, a much lower gasoline tax, and a lower state sales tax of 6.85%.
With such a difference in state taxes, you would think that leaving California and entering Nevada would at least entail a huge change in scenery, like gold-plated roads with pampered, uniformly wealthy people on the California side and huddled masses living underneath highway overpasses, asking for handouts on the Nevada side. But no, things were pretty much the same.
So what gives? What accounts for the difference in taxes and indifference in the states?

Can you imagine the kicking and screaming and caterwauling that would be going on if CA were really to cut the size of its overblown government?

One difference when you cross the state line is in the PRIVATE property:
Crossing into Nevada on the north shore of the lake is notable because you go from run-down (but still expensive) beach and ski cabins, to spectacular mansions.
On the south shore, you go from T-shirt shops and sandwich shacks to glittering hotel/casinos.

How dumb does one have to be to keep falling for this education rubbish. I can still remember the campaign about how the lottery would turn things around.
On both north and south shores the "rental ghettos" are on the California side where government benefits from unemployment to disability are plentiful for both seasonal workers and non-productive citizen voters. On the other hand, Nevada has the advantage of lower taxes in both sales and property resulting in more property ownership and less money for Carson City to throw around to lure dregs to their communities.
Now that’s organized crime and people say the Mafia is dead,she’s a no dead.
Nevada is taking lessons. I just bought an external hard drive in Nevada and was hit with 8.1% sales tax. A gallon jug of Gallo wine just went up $1 due to an increase in “sin” taxes.
The last time I went to CA, a couple of years ago, my son and I drove from Texas. We noticed that the underpasses in TX, AZ, and NM were all decorated somehow, usually with a theme related to the town where they were located.
Then we entered CA, and it looked run down—no decorated underpasses—buildings that, in some cases, looked like they had never been renovated since I saw them as a small child, in the 60s.
I remember growing up in the Golden State. It’s tarnished, now.
That’s all tahoe needs. The same idiots who voted in the likes of jerry brown and schwarzenegger living among them, having a say and vote in their affairs.
We sure had some fun back forty plus years ago in those “ghettos” didn’t we!
