Family legends. Just like everybody whose family has lived in Hawaii for long enough comes to imagine native Hawaiian ancestors, I guess people whose families lived in the former Indian Territory assumed their ancestors were Indian. Warren does, Obama does.

It can be hard to tell. If there were Indians in your family tree, they wouldn't have Indian names. But in the 1900 census, non-Indians outnumbered Indians in the Indian Territory by over 2 to 1. So if you look like Elizabeth Warren, it's best not to assume you have Indian ancestors.
