NM tribe makes Johnny Depp honorary

Johnny Depp has been made an honorary member of a tribe in New Mexico, where he is playing a Native American in the film adaptation of "The Lone Ranger."
Comanche Nation tribal member LaDonna Harris said Tuesday that the tribal chairman presented Depp with a proclamation at her Albuquerque home on May 16. She says the Comanche adoption tradition means she now considers Depp her son.

Wife of long-ago Oklahoma politician Fred Harris.
I don't know if Fred thought he had Indian ancestry like everyone else in what was once the Indian Territory, but it looks like he found a way to get around making false claims.

I've lived in NM for 35 years and never heard of a "Comanche Tribe". There are reservations for Navajos, Apaches, scores of Pueblos (each a separate entity) and Utes along the NM-CO border, but no recognized Comanche reservation. The Comanche nation is headquartered in Lawton, OK.

Later depictions of Tonto had him more or less as Apache, wearing a similar outfit to a non-bluecoat Apache Scout.

This would have been appropriate in the typical stomping ground of the Lone Ranger. Apache Scouts were highly regarded by the US Army, and Tonto being able to rub elbows with other Scouts in the area would have been a big help to what the LR was doing.
The last Apache Scout retired in 1947, but by that time, for close to 40 years, Apaches warriors, though not citizens, could and did become Reserve Army Officers.
This is not to slight the other US warrior tribes, who enthusiastically enlisted in both WWI and WWII.
