I suppose it could be an age thing. I was politically active and aware from the beginning of the Reagan years onwards, and we could see how the "progressive" label became more and more associated with those who were the communist sympathizers in those days. We actually saw a direct link between between (Democrat) individuals who called themselves progressive, and their visits down to the Sandinista Soviet sponsored utopia they were helping to build in both Cuba and Nicaragua.
Since communism is supposed to be "dead" and irrelevant today, the younger people don't have the opportunity to see it, especially when Republicans and Democrats alike make an annual pilgrimage to China to kiss the feet of the Communist leaders there.
