TRENTON — New Jersey may be among the richest states in the nation, but a record number of Garden State residents lived in poverty during 2010, according to a report scheduled to be released today. Nearly a quarter of the state’s population — more than 2 million residents — was considered poor, the annual survey by Legal Services of New Jersey found. About 150,000 people slipped into poverty in 2010, even though the great recession ended a year earlier, the report said. And experts say more recent unemployment numbers show that the trend of increasing poverty likely continued into this year.

Can you buy Klondike Bars with food stamps? What is poverty in Newark or Camden versus let us say Kenya living in a hut with no electricity or sewage system.
People are living in NJ but what kind of living is that? NJ Democrats will help you.

The number of Hispanics in New Jersey living under the federal poverty line increased 29.3 percent from 2005 to 2010.

Come to NJ as an illegal and we'll give you more than we give our tax paying citizens. The numbers are just a result of 30 years of liberal government in Trenton.

So much for Christie’s program to improve the New Jersey Business climate. He’s just a RINO buffoon full of hot air and yes, they will probably vote for Obama.

Some of them. But maybe, maybe, enough will vote for Romney to make a difference

Since poverty is defined by law as the lowest quintile, it is not at all surprising that about 20% of the people are considered poor.

As long as we continue to define poverty in this way, the poor will, truly, always be with us...

Christie has nothing to do with it. Camden, Trenton, Newark, East Orange....etc. Many thousands of minorities who are basically unemployable for life.
The inner city kids promote the idea that to do well in school means “acting white”....so they piss away their education and drop out of school by the thousands.
Then Barry Soetoro tells these zombies that they are F_cked because successful people are rich!

Christie is the best thing that has happened to NJ in years.....however he cannot magically turn ignorant bums into productive employees.....

EXCUSE ME. Christie ran for office promising to improve the business picture in New Jersey. New Jersey is still 5th from the bottom in friendliness to businesses. He has done NOTHING to reduce state mandates on businesses.

Aside from taming the state civil service unions - sort of - the Teachers and Law Enforcement unions are STILL running rough shod over taxpayer dollars and the are the most egregious culprits - he has been a dismal failure.

If Christie is the best New Jersey can hope for, we are the equivalent of a third world nation and he is Papa Doc.

Let's see - Tom Keane, Jim Florio, Christine "Witless" Whitman, Jimmy "The Gay-American" McGreevey and John Corzine represent 30 years of mismanagement and you think anyone (Christie included) can reverse all that that in one term?

While I agree with your premise (i don't think Christie is so great), I think it would take a fundamental sea-change in Trenton to undo what we've seen happen here since 1980.

I also tend to agree that we are, in-fact a "third-world" nation in this cesspool of a state.

I really see no hope for New Jersey. Unlike New York state whose main problem is one city - New York City, and Massachusetts, whose main problem is Boston, New Jersey has sunk to the level of California and Maryland.

Its hopleess here - utterely hopeless.

You are right. Christie couldn’t repair 30 + years of mismanagement in twenty terms in office.
