Arizona's secretary of state said Friday he had asked officials in Hawaii to verify that Barack Obama was born in their state in order for the president's name to appear on the November ballot in Arizona.

Ken Bennett, who is Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's campaign co-chairman in Arizona, said he made the request on behalf of a constituent.

Earlier this year, hardline Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio announced that an investigation by his office had found that Obama's birth certificate was a forgery.

Most Republican critics of Obama have given up pushing widely discredited long-running allegations that he was not born in the United States.

Bennett said he is attempting to confirm that Obama's name can appear on Arizona's presidential ballot, the Arizona Republic newspaper said.

While confirming on Friday that he had made the request, Bennett said he did not buy into the "birther" belief.

"First, I have been on the record since 2009 that I believe the president was born in Hawaii. I am not a 'birther,'" he said in a statement.

"At the request of a constituent, I asked the state of Hawaii for a for a verification in lieu of certified copy. We're merely asking them to officially confirm they have the president's birth certificate in their possession and are awaiting their response," he said.

Just wondering: Why did Obama order a new birth certificate, the short one, in 2007 in the first place? Why didn't he order a long form instead of the short form back in 2007 instead of waiting until April 2011 to order a long form?

1. Did he lose the original long or short form that he talked about in one of his books? He wrote that he accidentally found his birth certificate---he didn't say if it was a short or long form---when he was a youngster.

2. Or, did the dog eat it?

3. Or, was the one he had in such bad shape that he wanted a new one to replace the one that was in such bad shape?

4. And if he still had his original long or short form but it was in bad shape, why didn't he simply show the birth certificate to the public and the press in 2007 and 2011, even though it was in bad shape?

5. 2007: Why didn't then Senator Obama order a long form back in 2007 instead of ordering a short form, because back then a person could still order a long form with no questions asked from Hawaii?

6. Courageous reporter: I wish a courageous reporter would confront Obama and ask him why he ordered a birth certificate back in 2007, and why he ordered a short form instead of long form back then.

Hopefully Arizona isn't that stupid and their law gives the Secretary of State more flexibility.

What a waste of time. You lose a degree of privacy when you run for public office and as many here understand the "natural born citizen" standard cannot be met because his father was never a US citizen.

Almost all of the "birther" lawsuits have been dropped due to lack of standing. In this case, the secretary of state has a duty to determine the eligibility of a candidate and the NBC definition is murky at best.

If he had any balls he'd request a declaratory judgment in federal court as to Obama's status even based on his possibly forged birth certificate. In fact, arguably this could be a case of original jurisdiction that could be taken directly to the US Supreme Court. Anyone? ;-)

Since there is no birth certificate in existence, this request is actually the perfect approach. Someone in the state of Hawaii would have to risk being charged with misprision of treason if they can be proven a liar about this. And he still has NOTHING from them. Why would it take eight weeks (or even four) for any one of the officials from Hawaii who would have authority over the records to write up a letter, have it notarized and mailed.
