US sends troops to Yemen as Al Qaeda gains ground
By Anna Mulrine | Christian Science Monitor Fri, May 11, 2012
The week after revelations by a double agent that Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) was trying to take down a US airliner with an underwear bomb, the Pentagon announced that it has begun sending US troops into Yemen.
The move is part of a US effort to increase pressure on the terrorist outfit based in Yemen at a time when the Yemeni government is weak and only now beginning to emerge from a period of political turmoil. The troops will help train Yemeni soldiers, and together with a campaign of drone strikes and an increased intelligence presence, the aim is to hold AQAP in check while rebuilding the Yemeni government's capacity to fight its own battles.
US forces had been on the ground training Yemeni forces last year, but President Obama suspended the mission in the wake of political turmoil in the country. In February, Yemen's autocratic ruler of 30 years, Ali Abdullah Saleh, was replaced in a democratic election, making the return of US troops possible.

Didn’t a senior State Department official say about a month ago that Al Qaeda no longer represented a threat since so many jihadis had been killed? Or am I just totally mistaken?
I thought the war on terror was over??
I’ve wondered when we would go in and root them out.
Its probably necessary. The president announces the war is over, although its not, and carries on with another military incursion. His supporters will go along with it because its their guy doing it. If GW, or President Palin, sent the troops into Yemen you can be confident they’d be throwing a hissy-fit about now.
As it is they just pretend it isn’t happening and at the same time pretend O is a conquering hero, depending upon the needs of the moment.
In any case, the jihadis already control chunks of Somalia and a goodly chunk of Yemen. The Saudis and Yemenis are after them but probably have a good number of sympathizers in their own forces and their own officer corps. There is no bright line between “moderate” wahabis and the jihadis. They pretty much think exactly the same things.
So now we will send our troops to die on Yemen soil. AND, why???? Just like in other Arab counties .... so their women, dressed as Zorro, can be able to drive cars !!!!!!!
“Or am I just totally mistaken?”
I’m MIB, please look straight into this pen..right here..(FLASH)..As you were saying about pork futures??? Continue.

Thanks Libloather.
That is where the enemy is. That’s where you kill them. You don’t want them here again (9/11).
anything to keep our boys offshore and subject to ‘technical and logistical difficulties’ voting...
I would rather fight them there than over here.
The only reason they’re announcing this is because something untoward happened and they’re covering their asses.
KD, I’ve been thinking lately that we might want to entertain fighting them here. The screwy ROE’s would not apply and I think it would be short lived and very efficient. Oh drat. How’d that slip out. More caffine
needed.
NO question about that.
