It’s like when Jocelyn Elders was canned. The meme was that she was fired over her talk of taking sex positive teaching to kids and encouraging them to masturbate.
In reality it was because she supported rationing health care and said something along the lines, “Those old people are just gonna die anyway. It’s the kids that’ll be paying my Social Security.”

That’s because most voters aren’t aware of where the real fight is.
The left is hellbent (pun intended) on destroying the nuclear family. Every policy that the support, in some way is detrimental to the nuclear family.
Indeed, gay “marriage” IS more important than elections to them, because it is a severe blow to the concept of family.
