“History repeats itself.”
Hopefully, the history that resembles President Carter’s tenure in office will be the hoped-for repetition.
IMHO
Excuse me for taking so long to respond.
I have found nothing about that online, except that it was a very early form of dairy price controls, which continues to this day.
I did speak to my last remaining uncle today, and while he was too young to remember the incident, he was told the story a number of times.
Here is a synopsis of what he told me: The army was sent along to escort the executioners and to protect them from the livestock owners. The executioners were contract employees who obviously needed protection.
Somewhere, he has a photograph of a ring of either National Guard or Regular Army troops, armed and facing away from the action, while the contractor is standing on a loading ramp holding a rifle pointed down at the penned-up cattle.
I have seen this photo. He is looking for it. As soon as he finds it, I will scan it and post it.
By the way, this happened in Forrest, NM (named for Nathan Bedford Forrest)and in countless other places in roughly 1935.
We will find it.
My dad was so mad, it distressed him for a long time.
What I don't understand is, OK kill the cows to keep the prices up, but for GODS sake couldn't they at least have donated the meat, how hard a choice was that?
Here is a FIRST hand report of the Killing of the cows. Lots of info on Google. Will keep looking for a better picture.
