Limbaugh Asks: Will Liberal Media Try to Ban Football? By Matthew Sheffield Created 05/07/2012 - 6:01pm
Rush Limbaugh is wondering if the Left is going to try to ban football.
It sounds like a crazy question, given the massive popularity of both professional and college football all across America, but Limbaugh's question isn't as crazy as it seems. "Compassion" -- and the Left's reflexive Nanny State impulse -- might move the ball in that direction.
On Friday, Limbaugh wondered during his broadcast if well-intentioned liberals, out to make the game safer, might instead be paving the way for it to be banned:
Some of them are leading the charge and don't even know it with the way they're covering the sport. Some of them are leading the charge for getting the game banned and they don't even know it! By the way they're covering it. They're demanding this and demanding all these new safety features, safety regulations, safety rules. Empowering the government to police the game. They're begging for it, and they don't even realize it. They, in their naivete, think they're working hard to make the game safer and so forth, and all they're doing is paving the way for the game to be banned.
They don't even know it.
As if on cue the liberal media demonstrated what Limbaugh was talking about.
First, on ABC News's Sunday program, This Week with George Stephanopolous, guest host Jake Tapper focused on the NFL and the concussion issue, asking George Will, "Is football in trouble, or is this just the media making a muck?"
Second, the Wall Street Journal published an op-ed by "Friday Night Lights" author Buzz Bissinger that, quite seriously called for the banning of college football because college football loses money for many schools and "because college football has no academic purpose."
Weaving those two threads together, today, Limbaugh talked about what he said is a growing threat to the existence of football:
Folks, this is gonna happen faster than I thought. Maybe not an outright ban of the game, but I guarantee you this is gonna happen faster than I thought. It's funny for me. I read a lot of NFL blogs, and they're mostly written by typical liberal media types -- and these guys don't know what they're doing. As they write about this, they are paving the way for fundamental structural changes in this game that will make it not football, while they think they're doing compassionate stories.
For example, they're asking for federal commissions on concussions, "and we'd better have mandatory counseling for every player who retires otherwise they're all gonna commit suicide. For two reasons: A, all the head trauma; and B, people stop cheering for them, and their lives immediately turn meaningless. Every one of them." It's amazing to read this stuff. And I'm sure these guys all think that they're writing and positing with great compassion.
But they are paving the way for people who want to take the risk out of life to move in on football.
It's difficult to imagine Americans going along with government outright banning football, but it's easier to see "compassionate" liberals and trial lawyers gradually destroying the sport through excessive regulation, government intervention and lawsuits, while the sport at the college level, and eventually the high school level, is increasingly assaulted by people who agree with Bissinger, that it serves no education purpose.
On the other hand, changing football to be a minor league and major league system is very different from banning college-age athletes from playing the sport altogether. What are your thoughts, sports fans?

Peculiar how this is occurring while there is a big euro fottball push... its all about changing our identity, what we watch, what we eat....now, if that doesnt make you feel better, get out there and eat more quiche!

Great idean make the little rascals play soccer. Besides soccer (aka football outside of the USA) is a world sport.
Another benefit is the mega-sized players would be at a competitive disadvantage in soccer...make them all downsize! Walmart and the French Fry industry will be distraught!
I heard the segment. Ridiculous. America is being plundered and all this jabonie can talk about is his beloved football. Who the hell cares? America is being destroyed right in front of our eyes. The NFL should fend for itself. Stop with the nonsense. Every waking minute should be devoted to bring down the marxist fraud. Listened since 1988, but he didn’t do the job to bring Obama down. All the info was there to expose him but Rush wanted to play it cool, above the conspiracy murmurs, just to keep the money rolling in. No, he didn’t do the job then and he’s NOT doing it now. The NFL. Pathetic!
Limbaugh didn’t wonder, he predicted the eventual end of the NFL. One would be a fool to doubt him given his track record, my screen name aside.
What? Seriously? We’ve got an historic election on the horizon, we’re nominating a GOP Elite moron, and someone is actually bringing up this idiocy?

It is all the Marxist goal of creating radical egalitarianism-—where there is no difference between women and men-—where men are interchangeable with women.
Marxists abhor the Natural Family Unit and will destroy all relationships of men and women—and destroy anything that proves “differences”-—where women can’t compete “equally”. It is to destroy the protectiveness of males towards women-—why they want to put women in combat——to destroy the nature of man and the innate nature of woman....that nurturing one—which used to kill any stranger (or government) who tried to remove their young children and put them in the care of “strangers” and “institutions”. Women used to know how vital they are for the emotional health of young children in the first seven years of life-—and no indoctrination centers were allowed to touch them until seven when their morality was pretty firm. Then parents made sure the schools taught their Christian Values-—and never Marx’s. Dewey—the Socialist—destroyed the school system to destroy the moral foundation of children—inject moral relativism (atheism/pagan worship—wicca, etc.)
The government wants total control over children’s minds-—they have to remove the loving mother and protective father and the idea of God. Patriarchy is abhorent (reflects God the Father)-—anything which promotes risk-taking, competition, and manly behavior and Virtue is being eliminated.
Marxists are creating whimpy immoral boys who will be more interested in earrings and makeup and fashion-—who will be adverse to any risk-—uncoordinated and unable to judge danger or avoid it......all the characteristics of individualism and risk-taking that made America GREAT—(the patriarchy) is being destroyed. No fathers in the home-—means men grow up to be in prison or gangs or at OWS events. Boys never mature without the example of a moral father in the home.
Football is the greatest spectator sport ever invented. Soccer was invented for wimps who couldn’t handle Rugby.

Diving from boards has been virtually banned. At swimming pools across the country, diving boards have almost disappeared, thanks to trial lawyers and insurance rates. Even large institutions such as the high school from which I graduated couldn’t afford the insurance required to install a diving board despite its ability to it afford an Olympic-sized pool with a state-of-the-art electronic scoreboard.
I am lucky to have experienced the thrill of diving off a high diving board, something the vast majority of American youth will never know.

So true. When we were kids there was a park not far from us that are parents would take us to. They had a 20' high steel water slide with 4" rails (that's it). They also had a 10 meter platform. It took a lot of guts to go that high and jump off. But once you could do it, it got fun.
Fast forward to the year 2000, Maui, 7 sacred pools. To show off for my new bride I climbed to the highest point of a cliff over one of the pools. Once I got up there (I don't know how high) there was only one way down. I wasn't entirely convinced I could even hit the pool from that height but everyone was watching as very few went all the way to the top. I had planned on diving. Now I was secretly hoping for a helo rescue. I jumped. I should have waited to hold my breath. If you have never felt the force of a violent fabric enema caused by tragic water impact, you haven't lived. My trunks seemed to knock the air out of me as they slammed against my lungs.
Ahh. The memories.

What gets missed is that the better the protective equipment has gotten, the more serious the injuries have become.
When the player is more exposed, with less padding, no face guard, shoulder pads etc. One had to be more restrained in hitting, for fear of injuring self.
Perhaps, but players are getting bigger and faster each generation due to selective breeding, better nutrition, scientific training methods, and in some instances illegal chemistry.
Since energy is equal to the square of the velocity, it’s not a linear growth either.
