In Spain, the unemployment rate among workers under 25 is more than 50 percent. In Ireland almost a third of the young are unemployed. Here in America, youth unemployment is only 16.5 percent, which is still terrible but things could be worse.
And sure enough, many politicians are doing all they can to guarantee that things will, in fact, get worse. Weve been hearing a lot about the war on women, which is real enough. But theres also a war on the young, which is just as real even if its better disguised. And its doing immense harm, not just to the young, but to the nations future.
What should we do to help Americas young? Basically, the opposite of what Mr. Romney and his friends want. We should be expanding student aid, not slashing it. And we should reverse the de facto austerity policies that are holding back the U.S. economy the unprecedented cutbacks at the state and local level, which have been hitting education especially hard.
Yes, such a policy reversal would cost money. But refusing to spend that money is foolish and shortsighted even in purely fiscal terms. Remember, the young arent just Americas future; theyre the future of the tax base, too.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste; wasting the minds of a whole generation is even more terrible. Lets stop doing it.

Where are they gonna get the money to buy the votes of the young, by taking it from the pockets of fixed income people and savers who are getting nothing on their bank accounts and IRA’s.
boot the illegals and cut the size of the federal government by half and cut bureaucracy and red tape and regulations and taxes. Things will fix themselves.
New mantra: Denying girls/women taxpayer funded abortions amounts to a war on women.
Liberals have labored long and hard to establish the principle that the child is the enemy of woman.
Wow, Krugman has spouted some idiocy in the past, but this is a whole new level of stupid. Or rather mendacious.
Krugman true to form is an absolute lunatic on this issue.
And what, dear Mr. Krugman, is the desired outcome of student aid? Graduation and a career, right? A career in exactly what economy? Oh that's right...the economy that is being destroyed by taxation to help the 'needy' like students. The brain cells of liberals are arranged in a circular firing squad.
I have a novel idea, WORK THROUGH COLLEGE......I did...it can be done.
I’d love to see this idiot Krugman try to start a business, say for instance,in California.
You need employers to have jobs.
I would love to see these brilliant Sunday morning TV talk show hosts try to start a real company.
...”We should be expanding student aid, not slashing it”...
And, Mr. Krugman..Who will end up with that money? It will be your left wing academics and insitutions who will then raise tuition more to pay for their increasing salaries, sabbaticals, fancy “art” buildings in their name, and whatever else they would desire for themselves and their “agenda.” It will not go to further education in this country. Education needs severe reform through allowing our brightest and best to get the higher education which is free of left-wing political ideology. Many students belong in technical colleges or vocational schools which also cost way too much. College costs are a scam and need to be thoroughly exposed and investigated. A college education should involve acquiring a skill which everyone can recognize as useful. It should not be a propaganda training ground for socialism/communism.
Krugman is an utter asshat. And he got a Nobel. That tells me the Nobel is a good indicator of asshatness.
At first I thought to myself, what kind of barking
moonbat wrote this swill, then sure enough it was
Krugman.
Austerity holding down the economy?
He hasn’t even seen austerity yet.
Krugman is a dupe and a dunce.
The "war on women" is just another lie crafted by the DNC for dunces without critical thinking skills to lap up.
What was that old saying? Oh yeah, "there's a Krugman born every minute"...
austerity
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austerity
In economics, austerity is a policy of deficit-cutting, lower spending, and a reduction in the amount of benefits and public services provided.
I support austerity.
Signed, Student who stopped getting government aid/loans and continues to work his own way through college.
Also, forcing school upon them doesn’t mean that we won’t still be wasting the minds of a whole generation, the old you can lead a horse to water, you can send the generation to class...the ones who really want to learn will find a way.
The Annointed are getting concerned the unemployed and unschooled yutes out there are gonna start to get uppity about things....might start to go all Constitutional or sumpin’ on them....
I know one of these learned academics.
Without going into details, what you wrote about them could not be any closer to the truth. They are indeed running a huge scam and living large on the billions of institutional endowments, which are, of course, also subsidized on our backs via favorable tax treatment.
Getting into that elite club is not easy, but once you’re in, you’re in for life, and a very easy life it is.
