I’m actually considering raising Scottish Highland steer, probably two at a time. I found a place that does slaughtering and will even pick them up for me. $65 per head plus the packaging cost per pound (around 60 cents or so). I already have livestock guardian dogs. I figure I’ll have my own beef supply within a couple years. If anyone here is knowledgable about such things I’d love to talk to you.

I don't know first hand but I had a friend who tried it about 20 years ago with 3 beef cattle. He said it was a royal pain in the a$$ and after that he was going to the store to buy his beef like everybody else.

My friend also held down a full time job and said if he were retired it would be different.

I grew up on a cattle ranch. What do want to know? I’m not familiar with a Scottish Highland steer, but if you want good meat, an ordinary Angus or Hereford, are more than adequate.

You mention about having your own beef supply within a couple of years, I hope you weren’t thinking of using a steer for breeding.
