Santorum: I left GOP race because money dried up
CBS ^ | 4-12-12 | Rebecca Kaplan

Posted on 04/12/2012 7:46:55 PM PDT by Mozilla

When Rick Santorum ended his presidential bid on Tuesday, he spoke about the illness of his three-year-old daughter, Bella, and expressed a desire to spend more time with her as a parent. But on Thursday, the former Pennsylvania senator suggested the decision largely came down instead to a simple reality: He was out of cold, hard cash.

After losing Wisconsin's April 3 primary to rival Mitt Romney by seven points - a contest, Santorum said, that his campaign viewed as necessary to win in order to do well in his home state of Pennsylvania - his fundraising dried up.

"For the first time the campaign had a debt, the debt was from my perspective a little bit more substantial than I was comfortable with. And I'll be honest with you, Tony, in the last week after Wisconsin we basically raised almost no money," Santorum told Family Research Council President Tony Perkins in a radio interview, his first since announcing he was ending his bid. "We had solicitations going out and people were just emailing back saying the race is over..."

-snip-- Although Santorum has pledged to support the Republican nominee, which is all but certain to be Romney, he does not seem ready to begin campaigning for his onetime foe and didn't even mention Romney's name.

He continued to bemoan his party's preference for moderate Republicans in many elections, a sign he may not yet have come to terms with Romney's victory.

"For conservatives we have to get conditioned to understand that you're going to be fed a steady diet of establishment candidate as long as we go along with the ideas that winning is what matters and not what is the right issues to go out and win with," Santorum said.

Not enough donations to keep going is why Rick left. But he sounds unhappy about the process and not ready to embrace Romney.

Did that money drying up thing, perhaps happen sometime around when Santorum so quickly threw Zimmerman under the race-pandering bus?

Just askin’.

Sure seemed that way.

"We had solicitations going out and people were just emailing back saying the race is over..."

Donations dried up because people were told the race was over. When FOX News and the GOPe is spinning that Romney locked it up after WI, who is going to donate in this economy. As for this stupid charge about this Zimmerman case, believe it or not, most rational people are tuning out this ObamaMSM race hustling nonsense. I doubt any of Ricks supporters care about what he said.

From Pew Polling April 3rd:

Democrats, regardless of race, are following Martin’s death more closely than are Republicans. Nearly four-in-ten Democrats (38%), including 31% of white Democrats, say the killing of Trayvon Martin is their top story; just 19% of Republicans are following this story most closely. More than half of Republicans (56%) say the story has been overcovered, compared with 25% of Democrats, including 33% of white Democrats.

Guess what. There are far more important issues going on in this country effecting our future than this local matter ginned up for rating and to boost a sunken Rat base for Obummer.

I wasn’t a supporter of Santorum, but I am sure he had vastly more grass roots/activist support than Romney. It wasn’t even close. I actually know a lot of people that supported Rick, and absolutely none that backed Mitt. Not saying Romney wasn’t winning more votes, only that the folks he was winning among are mostly not the base (and real energy) of the party. Hate to say it , but what this shows is how a few dozen really rich millionaire backers can absolutely swamp the process and overwhelm the grass roots. Not saying there is much that can be done about it, but in the future the more conservative candidates are really going to have to plug into that money to even have a chance.

Several of Rick’s ads are still on the Web. We can send them to friends in key primary states.

Here is the remaining primary schedule:

I don't think Santorum will endorse, but pressure on him may change that.

So much for those who think he will get back in again... if money isn't there, I doubt he will - and that is sad.

Now the game is perhaps set. I don't like it.

IMHO...

Rick support came largely from everyday people.

He did not have wide support amongst Republican establishment types, who are basically completely attuned to “winning” at any cost. These “conventional wisdom” types are completely convinced that a) moderation is the key to winning and b) winning is all that matters. Actual governance, once a Republican is elected, is to them just more politics; the elected establishment types do simple political calculus to drive their decision making.

Big-money donors tend to be establishment types because they are typically well-connected politically, which means they are chummy with the Republican establishment.

Much of the population is worse off financially than they were a few years ago. Since Rick’s support was mostly with the “little guy”, it makes perfect sense that he had trouble raising money.

IMHO, add to that effect the constant Republican propaganda that only Romney could win the general election - this probably got a few people to reconsider supporting him (same problem all the other candidates had) - and that would make fundraising that much more difficult.

It’s key to get a few influential backers and some wealthy backers very early on to get some momentum early on and get the benefit of them propagandizing the propagandizers, i.e., talking them up in establishment circles.

This is why it’s so important to have “moral” leaders in business and government. If they see a need and decide to support a true conservative, it can make a big difference. Interestingly, what’s best for the country (principles, morals) is also best for them; but they still often can’t see the importance of morality. Being successful, they often fall victim to pride and attribute their success to themselves. It’s therefore difficult for them to humble themselves and therefore be able to see a need for turning to God.

IMHO...

Rick didn’t want to face a humiliating loss in PA. He’s preserving his chances for 2016.

Well, this experiment was a complete failure. Too bad Team Santorum decided that Gingrich deserved a slap-down at the time he was pounding Mitt.

Go Newt!!!

The Final Comparison of Newt and Santorum (according to the article):

Rick Santorum was not “comfortable” with his amount of debt, and dropped out.

Newt is currently $4.5 mil in debt, and has said he will spend 2-3 years after the campaign paying it off through fundraisers, personal appearances, etc., but is staying in.

Santorum considers getting the necessary number of delegates next to impossible, and has dropped out.

Newt faces the same impossible odds, and is staying in.

Santorum faced $2 mil worth of negative advertising in PA, and so dropped out.

Newt faced, endured and survived $17 mil of negative ads in Florida, and is still in.

Santorum really had nothing much going on when he decided to move to Iowa for a year.

Newt left his prosperous corporation in the hands of others, and it has now gone bankrupt.

Santorum couldn’t handle the when-are-you-getting-out questions, and the media controlling the narrative, so he dropped out.

Newt has endured and withstood the when-are-you-getting-out questions, and continues to fight the media’s attempts at controlling the narrative, and he is staying in.

There are probably more…

Let’s face it, Newtsters, this is a not a fight for the faint of heart...

ONTO TO TAMPA!!

You realize any donations you send now are just used to pay down campaign debt right? I mean, Santorum is well and truly out of the race.

If you wait a couple weeks the Romney campaign will probably help Rick pay all this off anyway. Probably part of a deal to get Santorum's full endorsement and campaign for him in key places.

If you are really looking to prolong the primary, you'd be better off sending to Newt - though his campaign is 4.5 million in debt and is barely functional as is right now. At least he is technically running a campaign though.

The old saying holds true again....presidential candidates seldom quit the race, they just run out of money.

It’s understandable, the times. Gas, food, everything
has gone up! A new very generous, richer than rich donor
would be the thing, yes?

Let us pray.
