Walter Russell Mead: The Myth of America's Decline
WSJ ^ | WALTER RUSSELL MEAD

Posted on 04/12/2012 9:09:15 AM PDT by nuconvert

The world balance of power is changing. Countries like China, India, Turkey and Brazil are heard from more frequently and on a wider range of subjects. The European Union's most ambitious global project—creating a universal treaty to reduce carbon emissions—has collapsed, and EU expansion has slowed to a crawl as Europe turns inward to deal with its debt crisis. Japan has ceded its place as the largest economy in Asia to China and appears increasingly on the defensive in the region as China's hard and soft power grow.

The international chattering class has a label for these changes: American decline. The dots look so connectable: The financial crisis, say the pundits, comprehensively demonstrated the failure of "Anglo-Saxon" capitalism. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have sapped American strength and, allegedly, destroyed America's ability to act in the Middle East. China-style "state capitalism" is all the rage. Throw in the assertive new powers and there you have it—the portrait of America in decline.

Actually, what's been happening is just as fateful but much more complex. The United States isn't in decline, but it is in the midst of a major rebalancing. The alliances and coalitions America built in the Cold War no longer suffice for the tasks ahead. As a result, under both the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations, American foreign policy has been moving toward the creation of new, sometimes difficult partnerships as it retools for the tasks ahead.

“...American foreign policy has been moving toward the creation of new, sometimes difficult partnerships as it retools for the tasks ahead.”

for what reason??

the pursuit of world government, European socialism, the accommodation of Islam, etc. What is the end game?

What are the “tasks ahead?”

I guess being the world's largest debtor nation and having our credit rating reduced is just part of that "rebalancing." And America's global role will decline because it can no longer afford to be the world's long superpower. The battle for guns versus butter is already underway.

Mr. Mead is a professor of foreign affairs and humanities at Bard College.

In 2005, the Princeton Review ranked Bard as the second-most liberal college in the United States, declaring that Bard "puts the 'liberal' in 'liberal arts.'"

In 2003, Bard Professor Joel Kovel drew criticism from controversial conservative columnist Ann Coulter for his book, Red Hunting in the Promised Land: Anticommunism and the Making of America, in which he compared anti-communism to a psychiatric disorder. Coulter, who has described Senator Joseph McCarthy as the deceased person she admires the most, accused Kovel of holding a "lunatic psychological theory" and counted Bard among the colleges and universities that "have become a Safe Streets program for traitors and lunatics."

Over the last year I have become a really big fan of Mead. In particular his series of essays on the decline/end/death of the Blue Social Model.

“I guess being the world’s largest debtor nation and having our credit rating reduced is just part of that “rebalancing.””

You are missing the larger point. History does not stand still, and this is not the 1950’s. Even if we did not owe so much the “rebalancing” would be happening. We are in the middle of major changes. Changes on a level of the 14th and 15th century. Where the this change will end up, no one knows.

You better watch yourself around here now.

Only groupthink is tolerated. Via Meadia is a "commie" site and WRM's writings, since he teaches at a Liberal Arts college, must be lunatic ravings of the unhinged left.

Get with the program, fight for the team, win one for the Gipper, blah, blah, blah...or be shown the door.

America is not declining.
What people THINK of America is declining.
Not myself included.
I’ve stopped thinking.

If you want to know if your nation is in decline just look at the values and morals that your society covet from the days long past to the days of the present. America is not in good shape if we use that as our bench mark, in fact it is down right scary to think of what the future will be.

America is in Decline, for the following 5 reasons

1) Demographics

2) This quote from Ayn Rand that says it better than I could

“Do you wish to know whether that day is coming? Watch money. Money is the barometer of a society’s virtue. When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion—when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing—when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors—when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you—when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice—you may know that your society is doomed. - Ayn Rand Atlas Shrugged 1957

3) Another Quote that says it all and better than I could

"The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president.

The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him president."

4) Demographics

5) Demographics

change isn’t necessarily something you will, or that you have any say in. it happens whether you “buy” it or not.

“...American foreign policy has been moving toward the creation of new, sometimes difficult partnerships as it retools for the tasks ahead.”

“Creation” means the willful pursuit of change. Which is fine if there is a need, or if the country will be better for it. According to the article someone is calling for change - hopefully not the WH - we seen their type of change and reject it.

that's the author's opinion.

Oh, btw, "change" has become a dirty word over the last 3 years.

Anyway, it happens, whether you want it to or not. What people call "change" is probably more like their reaction to change, than it is change itself.

I have to laugh at those here who complain about PC of the left, particularly after all the banning (for violating FR PC) and flaming of those who refuse to toe the party line, that have been done here.
Obviously Jim has the right to ban anyone he wants, but this strikes this gezzer as more than a little hypocrisy.

America’s ill-considered embrace of the one-way deindustrialization which is wrongfully named “free trade”; the near-total transfer of history’s mightiest manufacturing base — to a huge communist country — virtually dooms America.

America is indeed in rapid decline.

If we don’t wake up soon, and stop destroying our own nation, America will collapse.

America first. Now.
