What prompted me to look that up was...

At a gas station/convenience store, I watched a 300#, 5’0” bleach blonde, (complete with 4 sizes-too-small capri pants and cankle tattoos), spend 5 minutes getting her EBT card to read so she could purchase her 44oz soft drink and a King Size candy bar.

As the long line grew behind me, there were audible sighs as she then asked for 2 packs of smokes @ $5.50 each and paid for them with 6 ones and a pile of change that had to be counted out.

This is one of those brain teasers right?
If we give the poor people food for free, they are no longer poor.

This whole welfare state has gotten absolutely and completely out of control. I’m so sickened by it that after 4 years at this job I’m getting out the first chance I get because people like the one you just described are so numerous it would make most peoples heads spin if they saw it every day.

These are generally able-bodied people, perfectly capable of working. There are countless couples and young men who use their girlfriends cards and they don’t marry these girls because then she’d lose her benefits and he’d lose his freeloading meal ticket.

I don’t begrudge someone in need on a temporary basis but this is now a way of life and not only are the recipients by in large ungrateful, they are entitled in their minds and think nothing at all of how bad it looks to buy tobacco and booze with other people’s money.

It’s outrageous and until people get as pissed off about it as I am having watched it for 4 years, it will never change. I make it my personal mission to tell everyone I know and can what I see. Most people don’t even know that they get cash. Straight up cash. No way at all to see where that money goes and the government of IL, broke as it is evidently doesn’t care.

I stopped at a local watering hole a couple of weeks ago. There were about 15 people in there that day, people that I have known for 10 to 20 years.

All of those folks there, are under 55 and able-bodied looking.

As I sat there, I counted 7 of them that I know for a fact are drawing Disability and 2 that have already applied for it and are waiting for a response.

At least 2 of those are working full time as carpenters on a cash basis.

One of those who works, says he can’t work at his Union Carpenter job because he can’t breathe, was chuckling about getting those $100 inhalers for free while he stood there with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

and the kicker....

one that I know has lived under the radar since 1980, pulled up in an older ‘Vette and wandered in wearing hospital type clothing.

Sporting a new Trach Tube and message board, he ordered up a beer and a glass and a towel. He then used a large syringe to suck up the suds and shoot them into his stomach tube.

Kinda lost my thirst after that.

"SNAP plays a ... role in alleviating poverty,"

No, it makes poverty more comfortable and removes a very effective incentive for getting off your ass and working.

Handouts like this also raise the cost of living for the rest of us by artificially stimulating demand for goods and services.

OH

WOW

How disgustingly pathetic

Our entitlement spending is a fast moving locomotive headed for a cliff. What you just described is rampant everywhere. Fraud and abuse of the system is so out of control I’m not sure how we even fix it. But I know one thing, we could save working Americans billions of dollars if we cut back and re-evaluate, gut and fix the system.

Poor in America isn’t really poor. Unless, you call big screen TV’s and Coach purses and smart phones poor.

My wife and I are spending $700.00 a month on gas to and from work... and we are not driving any further than needed. It is killing us.

They probably did give themselves big raises.

I’m curious as to how they measured the supposed decrease in poverty because of food stamps, because the government does not include non-cash benefits (food stamps and all the other government goodies doled out to the “poor”) when it compiles poverty statistics. One can get all kinds of benefits, plus have a cash income, and still be counted as living in poverty.
