The University’s journalism school has officially recognized the power of a spell check.

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s spelling and grammar test, a requirement for all students in the school, will no longer include a spelling portion as administrators attempt to adapt to the changing industry.

The school will alter the test in the fall for the first time since the test’s creation in the 1970s

Spell check technology is pretty good but in my experience the grammer checkers are still just awful.

It is simply rude to correct people in casual conversation. Which is what this is.

Tough call. It's like telling someone they have toilet paper on their shoe. Ignore it? Or save them from further embarrassment?

But the spelling police aren’t the really obnoxious types. It is the folks that respond to a political point they disagree with by LOLing a misspelling. Which is the equivalent of saying “You’re dumb and your point is dumb” which is intellectually lazy and a conversation bomb.

Many Freepers who hate “spelling police” here are ecstatic about this! We’ve got a socialist as president and soon we’ll all speak Nadsat and Cubs Fan and others will be happy.

Ah yes. The ones who can't spell, and never will. The "secretary" can fix the problem, because they're too important to bother.

In all fairness, I refuse to use spell check and make the occasional typo to give them a small opportunity to gloat. If they don't need to worry about proper spelling and grammar, neither should anyone else. The incompetent have rights too. Hell, they can even be president and handle the occasional corpse.

When you do that here it’s like standing up on the table and shouting HEY JERK YOU’VE GOT TOILET PAPER ON YOUR SHOE!!!”

If your intention is pure you would send a private message.

The very reason I don't do it to fellow members. Professional writers are fair game.

I make plenty of mistakes on my own but nobody is paying me to write either.

That's "intellectually lazy" but sloppy spelling and grammar isn't?

The spell checker at work is on by default which is a pain because Herat, Afghanistan is always automatically changed to “Heart” in messages, documents and spreadsheets. That’s just one example. We’ve turned it off but I still see it from other people. How many other foreign words will get changed and no one notices?

If your intention is pure you would send a private message.

We know that the language is dynamic. Definitions morph and words are added every year due to widespread use (and misuse).

So you're correct. If we don't CALL OUT the LOOSE use of LOSE, then the language will become looser and our culture will be the loser.

Thin-skinned incompetents would say that.

Most of the private messages I receive are laced with profanity and megalomania. I ignore them all.
The few which are from competent people are never criticized in any way.

Selective on my part? Yes. My call.

I have noticed. It used to be that Editors got beaucoup dollars for doing their jobs. Now, they still get paid well but they are failing. They are probably far too distracted with the party scene, who's coming to dinner and which Merlot goes best with the new tangerine chicken arugala salad at Spago.

It also doesn't say much about Word Craft skills among the new crop of writers.

You got it right. Some FReepers and others are quickly throwing away American culture by their disregard of American English. Noah Webster was a great patriotic American. He wrote his dictionary for the home, school and church. Some folks here trash the language and it’s usage, apparently not realizing that the language is one thing that can communicate American and it’s heritage. Then some rail against the use of ebonics. The use of standard American English unites us. Some FReepers fight against that.
