Ordinary Versus Extraordinary
April 2, 2012

For more than a century, the pinnacle of golf has been to score 59—a score that had been recorded only three times in PGA Tour history before 2010. Then, in 2010, Paul Goydos scored a 59—only to be equaled a month later by Stuart Appleby’s 59. Consequently, some sportswriters speculated that the most coveted achievement in golf was now becoming commonplace! It’s amazing to see two 59s in the same season, but it would be a mistake to begin to view this as ordinary.

For those who follow Jesus Christ, it is also a mistake to view the remarkable as ordinary. Think about prayer for instance. At any moment we can talk to the Creator God who spoke the universe into existence! Not only are we welcomed into His presence, but we are invited to enter boldly: “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 4:16).

There is nothing ordinary about access to God—yet sometimes we take this privilege for granted. He is almighty God, but He is also our Father who loves us and allows us to call on Him at any moment of any day. Now that’s extraordinary!

Our prayers ascend to heaven’s throne
Regardless of the form we use;
Our Father always hears His own
Regardless of the words we choose. —D. De Haan
God is always available to hear the prayers of His children.

I remember when that ship came to Boston, it was too big for the Inner Harbor and had to moor further out.

So My extremely cool Daddy took all us kids out in a little motorboat to SEE it.

It was BIG. VERY BIG.

An excellent website to learn about the Battle of Midway.

An eyewitness account of the Battle of Midway.

And the IMDB listing of the movie depicting the battle.

The USS Enterprise certainly has earned it's place in history.

Flowers of the Forest

Black Watch Piper

The Soldier

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is forever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam;
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.
And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

Yesterday, on another thread, I reminisced about dad taking me to Hi-Fi Stores to “test out the speakers”. He would bring three ablums. Carimina Burana, Also Spracht Zarathustra, and a Mahler Choral Symphony.

It was SO MUCH fun!

My father was stationed on the Enterprise as a Machinists Mate, 1962-1966.

Wallace P. Whittet 1944-1979.

I have only a few memories of my father but knowing he was a part of the Enterprise's history always made her special to me.

It's breaking my heart she is being decommissioned. It's like losing another part of my dad.

When the Enterprise was first built, before her overhaul in the 80’s (or 90’s, I think), there was a round radome or something on top of the island. Looked like no other ship in the fleet. During the overhaul, they took the round radome off and made the island (you know...where the bridge, flight ops, and all the antennas are) look more conventional.

Good evening, Mayor, and thanks for today’s sustenance for body and soul.

Hope you had a great weekend. ((HUGS))

I found one! Old, but this was what i meant. Notice the difference in the island of yesteryear vs. today...

Good evening, ML...((HUGS))...did you have a good day off? You and Linda do anything special? Did you get to ride?

What a cool Dad to take all of you out to see the USS Enterprise...and in a LITTLE motorboat. What a contrast!!

Now I see what you mean.

Operation Sea Orbit — On July 31, 1964, USS Enterprise (CVAN-65) (bottom), USS Long Beach (CGN-9) (center) and USS Bainbridge (DLGN-25) (top) formed "Task Force One," the first nuclear-powered Task Force, and were sent on a 30,565-mile, 65-day voyage around the world, reminiscent of that of the 16 battleships of the "Great White Fleet" in 1907-09. Accomplished without a single refueling or replenishment, Operation Sea Orbit demonstrated the capability of nuclear-powered surface ships to operate in remote areas at high speeds without logistic support.
