Mitt Romney Never Flip-Flopped on Marriage
RealClearPolitics ^ | 12/02/2011 | Maggie Gallagher

This week, President Obama went negative, launching an ad a full year before the election attacking Mitt Romney's character for flip-flopping.

Clever, Mr. President. Too clever by half.

I'm not going to defend Romney from the charge that he has changed his mind -- on abortion he clearly has.

But I do want to take up the one issue I know the most about: same-sex marriage. (snip)

I don't mind anyone criticizing Romney for the things he has done. But this particular attack is grotesquely unfair. I know. I was there.

In the summer of 2003, when I learned the Massachusetts courts were likely to make gay marriage a reality, I quit my job and started up a think tank to work full time on the marriage issue. I traveled to Massachusetts multiple times to confer with local leaders, testify before the legislature, address grassroots gatherings, meet with policymakers.

Mitt Romney didn't just oppose court-ordered same-sex marriage with words, he fought hard, including behind the scenes.

When the people of Massachusetts mobilized the most massive signature-gathering operation in the state's history in support of a marriage amendment defining marriage as one man and one woman, Romney supported the effort.

Under that state's constitution, 25 percent of the legislators must vote twice to approve a proposed amendment before it goes to a vote of the people.

The fact is, that against incredible shenanigans by many pro-gay marriage Democrats, while Romney was governor, the marriage amendment made progress. On Jan. 2, 2007, a few days before Romney left office, more than 25 percent of legislators DID approve the marriage amendment.

Read the whole article. Maggie Gallagher is not supporting Mitt Romney for president, she is a solid Rick Santorum supporter. However I appreciate her honesty in setting the record straight in regards to Mitt Romney and same sex marriage.

May 15, 2004 Romney issues proclamation: May 15 is “Gay/Straight Youth Pride Day”. Romney’s “Governor’s Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth” events include parade, GLBT activism (with prominent transsexual radical activists), and a GLBT prom – two days before same-sex marriages are to begin.
May 17, 2004 Same-sex marriages begin across Massachusetts. Romney issues brief statement: “All along, I have said an issue as fundamental to society as the definition of marriage should be decided by the people. Until then, I intend to follow the law and expect others to do the same.” [What law? Original marriage statutes clearly defining marriage as between a man and a woman were –and are — still on the books, unchanged by the Legislature. So Romney is not enforcing the actual law—just a court opinion.]/

Romney enforces same sex marriage laws, just not out of state marriages which remained unlawful.

According to “Can Mitt Romney Serve Two Masters?”, by Tricia Erickson, as governor of MASS., Romney was for same sex marriage, perhaps seeing it as a chance to bring back polygamy. Romney’[s grandfather was a polygamist! He ordered all judges to perform the dding ceremony for two men or two women in Mass.. How is this “good for marriage?” what is The Flipper saying about same sex marriage now?

Maggie Gallagher is not supporting Mitt Romney for president, she is a solid Rick Santorum supporter.

Odd, since Santorum is the one who constantly makes the opposite assertions to those she makes here.

I doubt Romney has “changed his mind” on abortion or anything else. He has changed his position.

We can thank William Weld for Margaret Marshall.

In another flagrant lie about the law, Romney told Catholic Charities’ adoption and foster agency they had to give children to homosexuals even when normal mother-father families were lined up to give them a home. Again, he deployed his standard smokescreen, gallantly proposing a “special exemption,” with a wink of his eye to the militantly pro-homosexuality legislature. Again, he got caught. Former governor Dukakis pointed out that the “state law” that Romney was citing as requiring gay adoption was non-existent. It was merely an executive regulation that a governor can rescind with a few strokes of his pen. Romney was apparently fulfilling secret 2002 campaign promises ( http://massresistance.blogspot.com/2007/12/is-romney-working-with-log-cabin.html ) to Republican homosexual power brokers whose endorsement he coveted and received. He had sought no backing from social conservatives.

The argument against Romney on this issue has been debunked many times; I’m not going to do it now, for the obvious reason that I don’t want to be accused of defending Romney, or be banned for saying anything against whatever attacks are launched against him.

I don’t think false attacks are useful, but others do, and I’m not going to correct them.

But I did want to say that Gallager is a respected figure in the pro-marriage movement, and I hope nobody feels it is responsible to attack her for speaking the truth on this matter.

And I appreciate the two of you being willing to lend your voice to her defense.

Maggie Gallagher endorsed Rick Santorum in January, 2012. Google it.

Maggie Gallagher endorsed Rick Santorum in January, 2012. Google for ‘Maggie Gallagher Rick Santorum’ and see her endorsement of Santorum. There are many articles she has written about Romney that are blunt and scathingly true.

BTW, I admire Rick Santorum for his unflinching pro-life support and staunch opposition to partial bith abortion.

So? This article props up the father of homosexual fake marriage, Willard Mitt Romney, and misrepresents what happened in Massachusetts when the “Republican” governor broke the law, violated the state constitution and his oath, and unilaterally instituted this vile, immoral, God-defying, barbaric practice.

I don’t trust the writer, and haven’t for a very long time.

This is the beginning of the end of the 2012 set up of conservatives for complete compromise. As has become usual, in the end, in the formerly grand old party, it is required that all principle must be sacrificed on the altar of perceived political expediency.

Nothing new. We saw the exact same thing for years ago on behalf of John Judas McCain.

Rick Santorum for his unflinching pro-life support

Well, yeah, except for the times when he has flinched by supporting pro-abort politicians and policies and legislation that ends with "and then you can kill the baby."

Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?
