WASHINGTON U.S. investigators believe the U.S. soldier accused of killing 17 Afghan civilians split the slaughter into two episodes, returning to his base after the first attack and later slipping away to kill again, two American officials said Saturday.
This scenario seems to support the U.S. government's assertion -- contested by some Afghans -- that the killings were done by one person, since they would have been perpetrated over a longer period of time than assumed when Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales was detained March 11 outside his base in southern Afghanistan.
But it also raises new questions about how Bales, who was formally charged Friday with 17 counts of premeditated murder and other crimes, could have carried out the nighttime attacks without drawing attention from any Americans on the Kandahar province base.
The two American officials who disclosed the investigators' finding spoke on condition of anonymity because the politically sensitive probe is ongoing.

Have they spent as much effort on the major hassam idiot who killed all the Americans?

Why is Obama leaking this info to their preferred AP???
Okay, why would someone come back to the base if they had intentions to kill more people? Wouldn’t this just draw more attention to their comings and goings? what would they come back for?
Yet another thing about this story that makes no sense.
I guess gunfire is so common there that a few dozen more shots in the middle of the night arose no suspicions.
Where did the 17th victim come from? I thought there were 16 victims?
Everybody break out your ‘E’ tool.
It’s startin’ to get deep.
My guess is one of the wounded died.
How did this guy get on and off base with weapons at will?
Any idea how far away gunshot sounds can be heard?
It’s Afghanistan—EVERYBODY has weapons. A better question is just plain, “How did he get in/out of the FOB with no one seeming to notice?”
This is really starting to sound squirrely. The guy would have to be a ninja to do all that sneaking around killing in one night. Getting off and then back on base twice in one night without anyone seeing or hearing him. I don’t think you can just walk on and off those combat bases at will. Its not like Camp Pendleton or something.
Panjwaii is the DEADLIEST area of Afghanistan!!! The entire area is TALIBAN!! The roads are riddled with IED's.
Now they are saying he left a Special Forces COP TWICE???? IF he could leave without notice then Taliban could enter without notice!!! And now it turns out he did twice in one night???
An even better question is -
Where were the husbands and fathers in the middle of the night?
Also a good question.
And why those two particular houses in those particular villages...? And why burn some bodies but not others? And why did the Aerostat thermals catch him coming back after the 2nd house—why not any other time in his supposed comings and goings?
They were probably off building IED’s.
