Former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) on Thursday denied allegations that he paid to have sex with a call girl working for a high-end Manhattan prostitution ring.
Edwards’s attorney, Allison Van Laningham, is demanding a complete retraction from DNAinfo, the local Manhattan website that reported the story on Thursday morning.
“Mr. Edwards categorically denies that he was involved with any prostitute or service,” Van Laningham said in a statement. “These allegations are false, defamatory, and he puts those who would publish or repeat them on notice that they acting [sic] with actual malice by reporting or repeating them. He has demanded a complete retraction from the only source being quoted."

I’ve been in love with the same woman for 30-plus years, and as anybody who’s been around us knows, she’s an extraordinary human being; warm, loving, beautiful, sexy and as good a person as I have ever known.”
Aug. 8, 2008: Edwards admits to ABC News’ Bob Woodruff that he had an extramarital affair but says he is not the father of Hunter’s baby. He adds that he told his family about his relationship with Hunter in 2006 and made a point of telling Woodruff that his wife’s cancer was in remission when he began the affair with Hunter.
Jan. 21, 2010: Edwards admits that he is the father of Hunter’s daughter.
“It was wrong for me ever to deny she was my daughter, and, hopefully, one day, when she understands, she will forgive me,” his statement said.
The lawyer for Edwards is off-base in accusing the website DNAinfo of defamation and demanding retraction. The story cites a statement filed by the call girl with the DA’s office, and the reporter is entitled to report on that claim. Moreover, the investigative reporter, Murray Weiss, who broke the Anna Gristina story in the beginning, is very well-respected and has great sources.
A categorical denial from John Edwards?
That sure carries a lot of weight.
This is what leftists do. It doesn't matter that the website is simply reporting what was said to authorities, and it doesn't matter whether the information is true or false. All that matters is defending their guy, because he's one of Them. (For "leftists" above, you could substitute "lawyers" with the same result ;-).
If I'm surprised at anything, it's that John Edwards still gets any support even from leftists. He's such a loser, such an embarassment ... and he's white.
Given his history, who can honestly doubt that Edwards had sex with hookers? we have here a man that cheated on his wife while she was was dieing of cancer while simultaneously using her to garner sympathy from voters during a presidential election and then used money raised from that sympathy to try to pay off the mistress. These are the actions of a man without ethical or moral constraints. Having sex with hookers is like having a glass of wine to people like that. It’s just normal behavior.
That guy is such a liar. He’s an elitist who thought he could run for the highest office in the land and get away with hiding his affair and the kid that resulted from it. The hubris is astounding.

Stuff like they never had sex she just sat in a chair and told him how pretty his hair was. He probably paid her out of his campaign slush fund.

Some people are considered under the law as “defamation proof”; in other words, they have such bad reputations nothing you can say or write about them can injure them. I wonder whether Edwards could be considered “defamation proof” since he is both a lawyer and a politician neither of which are held in high regard by the public as a general matter.
Ahhhh. It’s already all been said above.
He should have done a Clinton and pointed his finger at the camera while categorically denying he had sex with (name or prostitution ring member here). That would have been more convincing.
As I recall it was those shameless journalists at the Enquirer that finally exposed the last whopper this christian angel of a husband and father told.
Here is a guy that:
1) Made millions in frivolous medical lawsuits
2) Married money
3) Cheated on the married money source while she was dying of cancer
4) Lied about cheating on the married money while she was dying of cancer
5) Fathered a child with a woman he cheated with on the... 6) Lied about fathering a child....
How does his attorney make statements like that with a straight face. Who should be ashamed?
Someone should tell Edwards he should move to Puerto Rico and never be seen or heard from again.

Actually, his defense is even stronger. The campaign paid for this. HE paid nothing! Senator Edwards clearly is trying to out-Clinton WJC when it comes to parsing the meaning of words. I’m perfectly happy to concede he’s the winner!

The point, I think, is just to back up Edwards’ claim that it isn’t true. It won’t get as far as an actual suit against the site that published the information: too much truth would come out, on the record and under oath.

Agree totally with you, except - why inflict him on Puerto Rico? Got to admit, I can’t think of a place sufficiently remote - maybe he should just hang around until election day, loudly proclaiming his support for the won, while denying the other accusations that are sure to follow!
